Isn't it always this way? Common lathe but not THAT common. The first one ($2200) was listed last week, then re-listed over the weekend. Probably a good deal if not too crapped out. The second one ($3900) is a new listing. Prices seem to reflect condition, with the second one looking pretty primo in the pictures and might be worth the premium. Both Vancouver-ish, and I am not.

For comparison SM 13x30 2000 series sold on auction in Edmonton (RB) like two weeks ago for around 1800 or so with fees. It was like a rust bucket. I did not see it personally but it was outside for a while... very poor condition. I considered buying it and fixing it up ...

SM in decent condition sold in Calgary like 2 months on auction for 3700 CAD with fees.

So it feels 2200 is a very good price.

I will have new-ish Modern Tools 13x40 (some say 14x40) for sale within days in Calgary for ... $4000. Just getting her ready.

First one is missing:

-Compound hold down nut
-Feed lever
-Tailstock quill lock lever and stud, probably wedge also.
-TTA connection parts

QC gearbox lever seems clocked out of range
Wrong knob (wooden?) on other feed lever
Bolt in place of reverse feed lever
Makeshift shims under the 4 way toolpost

Definitely a fixer-upper.

Hey Tecnico, So it sounds like you went to view the fixer-upper?
I did end up getting it and with the gear box it seems that it must have gotten shifted at to high of speeds and got jammed in 2 gears, Also noticed the shift fork isnt in the slot as well
. i did take it apart and clean it up some but now see that the ABC shifter isn't lining the gears up on shifts. so it makes me wonder if the gear need to be shimmed or something to adjust them?
heres a couple pictures of it. one before taking it apart and the second after.
I also greased the gears and shafts up but was thinking that maybe i should have just used SAE 30 oil on it instead?

i did take it apart and clean it up some but now see that the ABC shifter isn't lining the gears up on shifts. so it makes me wonder if the gear need to be shimmed or something to adjust them?

I would check the tapered pin the ABC shift handle first. It could have sheared but not fallen out thus leaving a “connection” between the handle and the shift fork shaft. Thus the handle’s indexing points could no longer correspond to the actual shift fork position.

I also greased the gears and shafts up but was thinking that maybe i should have just used SAE 30 oil on it instead?

Yes, use SAE 30 oil. The manual calls for the gearbox to be oiled (the oil will drip out the bottom) on that series lathes. The later / other model ones have an enclosed, oil filled gearbox.

With the gear box I can feel it snap into the 3 positions ABC. I did try to pull the ABC shifter apart and got stuck with the pin that holds the lever block to the shift fork post that goes through the case. I did try to punch it out but ill have to get a better punch and try again. I do believe it's a punch in/out pin that holds it together, Anyone can confirm this? and now I guess when I pull it apart I'll clean the grease off the use SAE 30 oil.

There does appear to be a pin holding the lever to the shaft.



Your manual is not clear on wether there is / is not a taper pin holding the shift lever hub onto the shaft.

My late model SM11-20 has a different ABC lever with a retaining set screw.

yea I agree on that the manual is really doesn't make it clear on that. I,ll post picture tomorrow or Tuesday to compare.

So I have figured out a couple issues.
1. Was #10- 24T Double Clutch Gear was in backwards.
2. The #13- Spacer Collar A-30440 is missing.
So hopefully I'll have it with the box of parts that came with the lathe.
next I'm going to clean up the 8 Position range selector and install it and see if it shifts good.
