Tractor parts-looking for a source

Upnorth

Super User
After a few years of successful running the Massey Ferguson 245 I rescued from going to the scrap yard after it caught fire has decided to start springing fuel and coolant leaks. Can anyone recommend a good place to source new radiator hoses and a reseal kit for a CAV fuel injection pump? Also can anyone can recommend a good tractor salvage yard? I'm looking for the section of the hood that the instruments and battery goes in. The original was damaged in the fire and the battery melting and spraying acid. I just repainted the original as a temporary solution. The tractor runs so good I'm pretty sure that it will outlast me and is worth spending a little more maintenance money on.

Lots of places online to buy CAV pump parts. I bought some through some individual in Macedonia because it looked like the best deal. I had no complaints. I've seen them available on Amazon, Ebay andni think AliExpress.

Where is your pump leaking from? Are you doing a complete rebuild or just a top cover reseal?
Just a top cover reseal and the little thing that looks like a cover plate on the bottom piece. I doubt the gaskets and seals have ever been changed. The tractor came with the original fuel filter or if replaced they repainted it with the same paint as the engine. Point is some of the maintenance was neglected.

I'm trying to avoid ebay and amazon. I'm trying to find a place where people know their stuff about tractors. I have had very mixed results buying parts of amazon.

There also tractor wrecking yards all over the place in rural areas of Canada and the USA. Not as many as car and truck wrecking yards, nor as obvious. But they are out there. You just have to go looking.

I can look digitally for those but there are none in my part of Canada that I can find.

Yup, Fawcett is one of the places I was referring to in my first post on this thread. Awesome place. It's everything a car and truck junk yard should be, but isn't!

Where is your part of Canada? It might help people offering suggestions. Even a general area. Are we talking Inuvik, Whitehorse, Thunderbay, Goosebay…?
“Upnorth” doesn’t narrow it down much.

The real problem, is expecting the guy behind the parts counter to know anything besides where to look up the parts if given the year make and model, and sometimes, the serial number to boot! Unless you luck in on a place that still has one of their 'old-school' guys working. My nearest Massey dealer (two hours away) was able to get me the correct clutch plate for my 1958 Massey 35, with the 4 cylinder diesel. I would bet that they likely stock the CAV seals you need, as those pumps were used on a LOT of models...

You pretty much need to educate yourself to be able to recognize when you are looking at good parts or not. Hit up the yards you can find online. Pretty much a sure thing that they have a deal with either freight or Courier companies to ship stuff far cheaper than the unwashed masses get charged. I used to drive by a couple pretty large outfits, in Central Ab, and South Sask. Everything from burnt down last year model combines, to steel wheel tractors recovered from a shelter belt of boneyard...

On the upside, too, the Indians, are still making old Massey models, so you may be able to hook up with someone over that way that is willing to ship. My experiences have been a little bit mixed, ordered a bunch of parts via ebay, and they were shipped by Courier, who would not deliver to my PO Box (naturally enough) and ebay does not allow you to list a residential address... Stuff that was sent by mail, I have been consistently happy with! Seller refunded me when the stuff never showed up, but even had he not, it was, like, $35 for the gauge and sensors package...

Try Ali Express and search your make and model, to see what shakes loose. Don't dismiss ebay entirely, as searching there may get you a name and contact info that you can deal direct with...

I'm in western Nova Scotia for half the year and Sault Saint Marie Ontario for the rest.

LOL! So, "Back East", and "Somewhere in the Middle!"

So much for "Up North"!

Seriously, search ebay, search Ali Express, and really, find the closest Massey dealer, to see what he can do. You might be surprised.

I did notice some parts from India and assumed they were for a new version of the 245. Good to hear they are possibly compatible with my old machine. I can get part numbers for my tractor from the AGCO website. I ran into a situation recently where they list multiple part numbers for the same hose. Mine uses 2 rubber hoses and a steel piece for the bottom hose. They list that plus a longer hose as parts. Took me a while to figure out that the longer hose probably fits in place of all three parts like my setup. I figured a knowledgeable parts guy might know that instead of me guessing. I have found the hoses and probably the CAV pump seals from one of the sources mentioned earlier.

Upnorth is in reference to my former work when I was south of the Equator quite often. As far south as Antarctica. Upnorth is when I'm at home.

All good man! Pretty much a commentary on the folks that read too much in and thought you were ACTUALLY up 'OUR' north, rather than being one of the Yoopers that thinks they are at the end of the world!

The Indians inherited a LOT of the 1950's Brit Technology, and are still using a bunch of it. Not gonna say it's always gonna work, but the value to cost ratio, seems pretty bearable, from a risk perspective.

I spent some years in Arctic - I didn’t consider it Up North until you’d left the continent. Different perspectives.
But considering your location, no sense telling you about the pick-a-part salvage yard in Southern Saskatchewan.
My neighbour has a Massey 245 (diesel). Great machine. Sits for months and starts first hit. Well worth keeping it running!
