Time zone follies.

The arguments for and against DST have been kicking around for a century or two, and as is the case with people who like to claim etymology based on acronyms, most of the stories of its origin are bullshit (there's no shortage of books on the subject). The best description of DST, though, is this one: Only a white man could think that if he cuts a foot off of the top of a blanket and sews it onto the bottom of the blanket, he has a longer blanket.

But regardless of how you feel about it, I just want to say that for the first time in my life there will be a one hour difference between Mountain and Eastern time rather than two, and that feels pretty damn weird.

I agree! All these regionally determined time zones are just nuts.

I'm going to stick my neck out with this opinion ... the agreements made back in the dark ages to divide the globe into time zones for navigational purposes certainly predate "daylight saving time" and time zone application should be federally controlled. Abdication of such influence has led to this mess.

But then, I'm (one of the few?) that also thinks Canada should have a single motor vehicle act as well.

Ummmm..... It does. The federal "Motor Vehicle Safety Act" applies to all vehicles in all of Canada. It is often shortened to "Motor Vehicle Act".

You must mean something else. Maybe the various "Highway Traffic Act"s for each Province?

I'm sorry, I failed to check what they called the provincial law governing motor vehicles in Ontario before posting. My BC resident biases are showing ... we call it the "Motor Vehicle Act" here.

Bottom line is that we have, in my opinion, too many small kingdoms of control in a country with the population of a large city. Why do vehicles moving from one province to another often require inspection? Wouldn't it make sense to have a Canadian registry? Why don't we have a single drivers license for all of Canada? Never mind all the building codes. How about workplace safety expectations and insurance? The list goes on and on.

Surely there is a way to streamline at least some of this - timezones could be a start.

I'm going to stick my neck out, too. I may even insert a bit of personal opinion, as well.

I work outside, unlike the idiots who drive desks under artificial light (from the second they walk in the door until the second they leave, DST or not) who made the stupid decision to change.

My shift starts either 7:00 or 7:30. Not having a time change means that the sun won't rise until around 9:30AM in the middle of winter, giving me an extra hour of darkness/twilight/whatever to try to conduct my work in.

I operate a boom truck. Try safely placing a lift of siding or lumber behind a 6' fence in a dark yard, positioning drywall inches from a hole in a wall so the boarders can slide it through or lifting shingles in the pitch GD dark without punching a hole in the roof, knocking a shingler off, or hitting a power pole or line.

All because of the loss of an hour of sleep once/year.

Wah-frickin'-wah.

And, it's a fair assumption that anyone who works outside either appreciates the earlier sunlight or, like me, needs it for safety reasons. It's a poor decision and, like always, falls on the shoulders of working men & women while the suited elite pat themselves on the back for a job well done. Like this country doesn't have a thousand other issues of greater importance...

im with ya @JustaDB, only someone who goes to work at 9 thought it would be a good idea to have the sun rise by 9.30 instead of 8.30, its already a long wait for the sun to rise and things to warm up during December. Now its going to be worse.

I also don't know what its going to do to the accident rate, how many people (people who only drive to the office, people who stay home when its gloomy) are going to be stuck driving in the dark, i can forsee a sharp rise in morning traffic accidents

Yes, it really should be nationally mandated in order to eliminate this chaos. Time zones were invented for a reason. On the other hand, there's always been a movement to simply eliminate them entirely and put the whole world on one clock. It seems crazy until you think about it; the hands on the clock are really an arbitrary construct, and if you're going to work each day the same elapsed time after your sunrise, it doesn't really matter what the clock says.

Well thank goodness I didn't have to waste all that time changing our clocks and stuff this morning because I needed that time and more to fix all the smart devices that changed time automatically because the various tech makers didn't figure out that we are now permanently on DST. I'm sure at some random point in time they will figure out the correct time zone mapping and then I'll have to revisit those settings to get them back on track. Sure glad or government thought this through so well before foisting it on us.

It's kinda funny, but for as long as I can remember there's been health and safety warnings with every time change and experts screeming about the merits of one time year round.....
Now that we're here, it's more of the same..... I swear, the grass is only going to be greener over the septic field......

Absolutely - it'll come with the next operating system license you buy.

OK boys and girls a fun little trivia question for you all. According to Geomatics Canada ( the good folks who draw all the aviation charts on behalf of our Canadian government) how many time zones are there in BC ?

Two that I'm aware of. You cross from one into the other just west of Cranbrook on Hiway 3. Don't know what Geomatics says.

I swear I had a similar question on my effing RPAS test, which is really important knowledge for a stationary RC pilot standing in a field.
Well I'm going to cheat & ask Gemini, it says 2. You are not by chance talking about the NW coast white stuff (Alaska panhandle)

Nope, not Alaska, BC. Gemini is wrong.
And yeh, why would an RC pilot need to know their time zones ? I guess if their is a requirement for them to check NOTAMs they would need to know their zulu time as that is the standard for them (NOTAM - NOtice To Air Men)
