What size for a hobby guy? My largest lathe has a 36" bed length.
12" is perfect for most things and cost efficient. If it's a longer bed you just need to run the level along the bed in more areas. It's long enough to go over bedways (I use 123 blocks to get it up over the vees). Bridgeport and surface grinders.I do not have a level. If you only budget for one. What size for a hobby guy? My largest lathe has a 36" bed length. I'm assuming these are like other levels .....different size for different problems........but what can I make due with. (I have never checked the level on any of my machines.)
Sounds good. You can let him know I'll be through town likely early afternoon today, then probably later afternoon on Friday, to give him some heads up. But for sure you can get him to contact me@Chicken lights - The seller accepted my offer of $175. I think that's a fair price for a "like new" level. We still have to work out the details of pickup location and timing and I need to pay him. He isn't really very prompt with replies so it will be best to have the details worked out well in advance. He knows that a buddy of mine will do the actual pickup. I'll txt you with details as I learn them. I'm guessing it's best to put you in touch with him yourself.

How else is he supposed to verify that the one he just bought is up to snuff? You need a Starrett Master Precision level .....the 199. Now THAT is the level be reckoned with! (After that lead up ..... just so happens I have one for sale for $450)

I think resolution is more important than sizeA few days before this thread popped up I had messaged a lady selling a 8" Starrett. She has it listed for $300.00. I was hoping she would be a little more flexible on the price. ITM has the same level listed for $261.

She has not responded to me yet.
Then I see this thread and started to wonder what size I should be looking for.
It is and this is where the starrett shines.I think resolution is more important than size![]()
That's what they all say when they're a little bit lacking in size.I think resolution is more important than size![]()

Wonder if those J's were Johns....
I recently bought a... something... last message was asking for a shipping quote... next message was I'm heading to the post office, what's your mail address? Paid him one or two days after he dropped it off at the post office. CrazyWanna hear something amazing? He gave you that level before I even paid him! In fact, he still hasn't sent me the payment info!
We all complain about shysters, crooks, frauds, and liars on Facebook and Kijiji. But every once in a while somebody proves that there really are good honest trusting people out there. Now I wish I had met him.

I’ve rescraped two precision levels (not P&W), but for this one I can’t tell from the pics if a rescrape is needed. A blue up session, and a hinge test, on a known at least A grade if not better surface plate would help.I have this 15" cast iron Pratt & Whitney level I p/u at an auction last fall, have a look at the bottom.
I know it probably makes no difference but all those scratches are screaming at me to" fix" them.
Any opinions?
