Starrett 12" machinist level - $200 - Goderich, On

Sorry for the late post. I'm busy planting this week.

What size for a hobby guy? My largest lathe has a 36" bed length.

I'd think a 6 is all you need for lathe levelling. An 8 might be more versatile. The bed length isn't a factor. Levelling is actually a very poor name for it. It is better to call it aligning. Lots written elsewhere on the forum about aligning a lathe.

I do not have a level. If you only budget for one. What size for a hobby guy? My largest lathe has a 36" bed length. I'm assuming these are like other levels .....different size for different problems........but what can I make due with. (I have never checked the level on any of my machines.)
12" is perfect for most things and cost efficient. If it's a longer bed you just need to run the level along the bed in more areas. It's long enough to go over bedways (I use 123 blocks to get it up over the vees). Bridgeport and surface grinders.
Leveling out a mid size CNC bridge mill when I was an apprentice, I used my 12" on a custom 2pt, heat treated parallel. Picture a sine bar basically. Parallel was about 4 ft long but was able to measure from leveling pad to leveling pad so helped determine twist easier.

@Chicken lights - The seller accepted my offer of $175. I think that's a fair price for a "like new" level. We still have to work out the details of pickup location and timing and I need to pay him. He isn't really very prompt with replies so it will be best to have the details worked out well in advance. He knows that a buddy of mine will do the actual pickup. I'll txt you with details as I learn them. I'm guessing it's best to put you in touch with him yourself.

Sounds good. You can let him know I'll be through town likely early afternoon today, then probably later afternoon on Friday, to give him some heads up. But for sure you can get him to contact me

It's on at least it's 4th owner :D
Wonder if those J's were Johns....

A few days before this thread popped up I had messaged a lady selling a 8" Starrett. She has it listed for $300.00. I was hoping she would be a little more flexible on the price. ITM has the same level listed for $261.

She has not responded to me yet.

Then I see this thread and started to wonder what size I should be looking for.
I think resolution is more important than size :D

It is and this is where the starrett shines.

There are similar precision MIC levels on Ali/eBay for cheap, however everyone that gets one states that they are too sensitive, sounds like 5 or 10x more sensitive than the Starrett making them useless unless your machine is on a 20' concrete base. My buddy tried one and ended up borrowing my Starrett.

Wanna hear something amazing? He gave you that level before I even paid him! In fact, he still hasn't sent me the payment info!

We all complain about shysters, crooks, frauds, and liars on Facebook and Kijiji. But every once in a while somebody proves that there really are good honest trusting people out there. Now I wish I had met him.

I recently bought a... something... last message was asking for a shipping quote... next message was I'm heading to the post office, what's your mail address? Paid him one or two days after he dropped it off at the post office. Crazy

Anyway, thanks for the nice level, nice to know it was free and I'll think of you fondly when I look at it

I have this 15" cast iron Pratt & Whitney level I p/u at an auction last fall, have a look at the bottom.
I know it probably makes no difference but all those scratches are screaming at me to" fix" them.
Any opinions?

I’ve rescraped two precision levels (not P&W), but for this one I can’t tell from the pics if a rescrape is needed. A blue up session, and a hinge test, on a known at least A grade if not better surface plate would help.

If a guy isn’t comfortable getting a least 40 points per inch while scraping and having a good feel while hinging, it would be best to leave alone.
