  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Spindle RPM 10" lathe

I managed to get the SM 10" Utilathe down and into the shop yesterday (Thanks Brad for the help). The transmission is too noisy for my liking so I'm sizing up plans to bypass the transmission altogether and drive the spindle from perhaps a ~3HP servo motor via taper lock pulleys. No gear train, no noise. I'm going to technology it into (noise) submission. Will it have the grunt of the original lowest gear, probably not, however with 3HP and some multiplication via the pulleys perhaps enough.

A few unknowns:
1) Can I squeeze in a two step pulley with perhaps a 3:1 ratio for lower RPM grunt?
2) Sourcing a suitable servo or possible a 3PH with very good low RPM torque
3) Fitting new motor (fair bit of space back there.
4) Practical maximum spindle RPM? I mostly turn regular steel and aluminum so I'm thinking 1500RPM, thoughts please?

I will also do away with the threading gearbox and replace that with an ELS, however that's another topic.
