Sourcing Metal | General Discussion

I seen this place advertised on Facebook Market place. Looks like they are in Calgary.

Posted here for reference. I have not tried them.

They are good, structural steel mostly. They don’t have alloy steels and say there is no market for it. They do have quite a bit of aluminum. I have purchased 1” and 1 1/4” rectangular steel solid bar from them, and recommend them.

I have bought steel by the pound from General Scrap. They are owned by Price Steel, a good place to buy large quantities.
I have found that for oddball steel like T1 that C.W. Carry will cut to size. I seldom darken the door of Metal Supermart but I priced a 53"x4"x1/4" piece of T1 at Metal Supermart quoted $535, Then I bought it at CW Carry for $146
Try Encore Metals, merged with Team Tube for heavy wall tube and heat treated chrome moly rod stuff
These are my go to places

operated by a guy and his son. they are good guys. Some things seem expensive, but they are usually less than the usual suspects.

I've been trying ro find some fairly thick stainless steel flat bar and plate. I plan on putting together a stanless steel multi tool. Most tools would be made from some 1/16 - 1/8 inch tool steel or high alloy stainless steels depending on the tool. Those are sold where I buy my knife steels, but not everything needs to be higher quality ss. The frame and the pliers could just be made of 304 ss, but they also need to be thicker. The pliers would require 3/8" ss.
Most places that sell stainless steel sell it as thin sheet metal, tubes, and rods. It's hard to find a supplier for thick ss.

How big of a piece are you looking for? Take a look at this thread, post #5....

4"X1", what I believe is 2302 Stainless.

You probably wont like the shipping component price but at least with OLM you have many options & can get exactly what you want. I have often found on the raw material cost alone they can be be 1/2 the price of my local seller but it varies by alloy. They ship UPS which normally sets my hair on fire but OLM applies some kind of all-in cost & discount to Canada. You can populate the cart to see what you are looking at & just cancel if you don't like it. I have never had a problem & never had a boomerang UPS ransom bill in the mail. Package just shows up on my door within week of order. So I save up my wish list items & try to economize on shipping. To put a number to it, maybe 40 USD shipping on 200 USD order, that was over a year ago now. Shipping cost of metal in particular is the killer no matter where you go. And of course driving your vehicle costs money too.

The other potential option is Ali. Sometimes you can find exactly what you need in small qtys & the subsidize shipping

Alta tube can also be decent for heavy wall tube, CPO and induction hardened rods, and i think I’ve also seen some brass, bronze and maybe aluminum there.
