Something I would never do in my shop.

I like the idea but the risk of damaged equipment/tooling doesn't seem very economical for the price. Mind you for what he is asking good deal for renter I think.

I'm wondering what would happen if someone was to get hurt using his machines? Definitely need a lawyer to draw something up. Have the user sign it. (also covering damage to your shop/machines)

Edit: Skippy beat me to it.

I don't know if I could let myself trust you gents with my 3D printer. lol What if one of you printed a rainbow dragon on it?

Some twit looses a finger and you will be sued, no matter how many riders you have sign.
I feel like you could probly get a release of liability thing drafted up but still feel like between insurance or court someone's gonna bend you over.

That and the government seems to like to step in if they feel things are unfair.

As I found out recently that there is a government office in BC that can over turn wills if they feel them unfair. So I can see them doing same thing to injury claim.

The reality is that there are many maker spaces across NA with very dangerous equipment available to members for their personal use that are not being sued into oblivion,

The reasons why are they have mandatory training, and well designed safety protocols that involve direct supervision and good group insurance from specialized carriers.

That said, I work in my friend's shops and they work in mine without worrying about suing each other... we make sure we're all operating safely.

Strangers though... damn I view most as too dumb to breath so I'd not rent out access in that manner unless I set up a maker space. Even then I'd have mandatory intelligence and operations testing first

We were contacted by a child of my brothers 1st wife through a Genealogy DNA testing kit. Since both my parents are deceased now we say she should be included in the will but apparently the lawyer says if she is adopted she isn’t included unless we break the will then she can be included for a 6th of Bobs portion of the inheritance.

It is well known that waivers are limited in that they are not enforceable in cases where a business or individual is negligent in protecting the safety of others.

Conversely, individuals and businesses who follow workplace safety rules, educate their workers and adhere to protocols are inherently protected in the event an accident still happens despite following best practices. They may lose in a lower court but win on appeals.

Any individual who lets others rent their shop better follow all the workplace safety rules of they have extreme risk. I dont know any hobbyist who has appropriate guards installed.

I spent a few goodly sums of money to get an educated legal opinion on this matter when I had considered opening several different businesses that involved risks to clients.

yah know, if you spend it all before you die you dont have such worries

Well we told them years ago to do that, the best they did was a couple trips to England and Scotland.

Liability is why shop classes build with popsicle sticks and white glue… Why it’s hard to find a tradesman nowadays let alone a co-op student.

Hi Group,

Im sure this guy isnt doing this as a real source of income
It's possible that he enjoys mentoring and giving people the chance to get their hands on equipment they wouldnt normally be able to use.
Perhaps he might stay with the person, supervise and teach.
I taught many greenhorns and produced a couple first class journeymen and I enjoyed that.
Some of my stuff got damaged, but that was rare. Is there risk? Of course.
If we all worried about liability as our first priority nothing would ever happen anywhere.
Maybe someone should contact this guy and ask him about his offer.
Best to you all

Imagine the health&safety folks if they ever saw one of these in operation. If the apprentice loses a few fingers running the saw, it’s obvious they’re not destined for carpentry. Or the 850 lb portable saw. The pedal-operated bandsaw for the teenagers is also a grand idea.
