SM 10" Utilathe Tailstock Taper Question

Hi all - Long time lurker, first time poster!
I was fortunate enough to get gifted an old 10" Standard Modern Utilathe. Lovely machines.
The machine was apparently from a school. In great condition from what I can tell.

So far I have seen two issues, main one being the tailstock quill taper (MT2) is badly grooved from likely numerous "spun chucks". The only other issue is the feed apron "22T bevel pinion gear", and its "55T bevel gear" partner are quite worn out, although the feed still works well.

Any advice on fixing/replacing the tailstock quill taper? Was planning of getting a MT 2 taper reamer and going easy on it, aligning with center in Headstock and manually turning with wrench, removing as little as possible. Any one know of any alternatives, or a good source of replacement parts? I know Leblond make them for crazy money, so likely not an option.

Same question for the bevel gears, anyone have any solutions? I looked for standard gears to be modified, but no joy in finding anything close.

Thanks to all!
Great Forum

PS
I am out in Burlington Ont btw! Glad to be here.
I also was fortunate to find a Clausing 8520 mill, and have a SB 9A that I did a minor rebuild on, could be in the market to sell the SB 9A as I have the SM now.

Welcome from Calgary.

I reconditioned the tail stock on my SM 9" Utilathe using a MT2 taper reamer. How bad are the scores on yours?

I have some 9" Utilathe apron parts. Can you post an apron parts list for you lathe showing the gears you need to replace?

@Brent H any chance 9" Utilathe apron parts will work for a 10" Utilathe?

Hi/Thanks Craig!

Hard to quantify the depth of the grooves, but I would say based on feel only they are pretty much throughtout the entire length, not just localised, and are maybe 0.005/0.010" at the worse case.

The 10 Apron parts list is below, looking for gears #8 and #4:

Unfortunately the 9" Utilathe doesn't have anything that looks like gears #4 and #8 :(

@YYCHM - the gears are totally different, alas. They are on my “to make list”. The 55 tooth is pressed onto the shaft (hopefully removable to just press a new one on). The other gear is machined onto the shaft and that shaft is hollow and the outer surface is polished. A key is fixed at the shaft centre that engages the feed shaft groove. I machined that key out and fit a new one (welded in) as that was the worn part. My gears do need some TLC.

@cebe11 you can ream the morse taper to fit. Some grooving shouls not matter provided you still have some good contact area.

Ah, ok, great input, thanks Brent/Craig, I figured the 22t gear was pressed onto the shaft as well, learned something new.
They sure did a LOT of machining to make these lathes!!

#4 and #8 gears are worn out on my SM 10" as well as it also spent its life in the school system.
But I love using it, so much more rigid than my old SB 9A.

Hey @skippyelwell - I have a request into the Chinese for 12 DP x 20 PA. I will let you know as I have a few machines needing some gears in the 12 DP.

I have most of the cad laid out for the bevel gears and the cutters. If I have success I will post that and maybe a couple more lathes are “awesome”
Keep us posted!
