Slab dining table legs

The wife decided it was time for a new kitchen table (fair enough, i bought this one off kijiji 10 years ago), looked around, looked around, didnt find anything she wanted. After having dinner at one of her co-workers house's and seeing her slab table that was what she wanted.....good thing that same co-workers husband was the one who made the table, he was also young, and wanted to get into it as a side job.....perfect.....i dont have to do the wood working! Not out of the woods yet, the thing needs legs, she wants metal, and after searching we couldn't find any that would work with her wheel chair.....well add that to the list i suppose. In the end she's paying for the slab, and im paying for/building the legs.

Good no work/rainy day project so here she goes

Why not use the mill/drill for all the holes, i chose a symmetrical pattern so that i wouldn't have to lay anything out, set up a stop and use the dro, just need to flip the parts around for the various holes

Parts all cut up and laid out, the tubing is 2x2x.065 and 1x3x.065

nuts welded on to the end caps for the use of levelling feet if so desired, and caps welded to the end of the tube

welding slugs in so that i dont crush the tubing when tightening things down, and welding the back side of the 'fakers'

The powder i had must have been contaminated, every piece fish eyed like crazy....only saving grace is that its so consistently fish eyed it looks intentional...wife actually likes it....so i guess it stays like this

And the slab, before epoxy, it is actually ready to be picked up, but its raining, so it will wait for another day

I don't know if it qualifies as gigantic, inside it measures 2x3x4'-4", and you loose some on either side for the elements

it actually used to be 2ft taller, but I didn't need that height anymore, and it took much longer to pre-hea+ moved it to a spot with less headroom

I still did have to do the 2 welded leg sections separately, you cant pack things in as tight as you might think, it's pretty easy to swipe off the powder loading things in

Bob Ross would say that's a happy little accident on the powder coat. Nice looking slab. Good balance of features/character and solid wood. I see a bunch of those slab tables that are basically junk wood and 75% epoxy. Internet loves them for some reason I can't figure out. I like a bit of figure/knots/cracks, but not too many. Nice job on the legs too.

I have some big slabs from the backyard maple tree of my childhood home I'd like to make a table out of someday, but have nowhere in this house to put it. Plus I already made our kitchen table and don't want to get rid of it lol.

Wheelchair, dang I'm looking forward to the 601 mod posts now.

haha i wish, she wont fly with me "unless its a 4 seater or more", in her crazy lizard brain 4 seats is somehow safer than 2 ? i suppose a 4 seater could take more cross wind given its heavier...but thats not her thought process......its bigger, therefore its safer....

if she was into going up i would be hot after a high wing, there's no way without a lift or crane of some sort i could get her into a low wing of just about any make, just to many problems getting her down into a seat....or more so getting her back out

A four seater is twice as efficient at killing people.

I love it, thats the best answer ive ever heard :D. No doubt about it, GA is not the safest thing a guy can do in his spare time.

Ha, now i just need to turn one into a "happy little tree" and i would be making good ol bob ross proud!

I think the epoxy trend is slowing down? i dont see as much of it on the net any more, some pretty god awful projects out there, like you said, crap wood, 75% epoxy, and some crazy "i sold this table for 5,000$" price tags. I never got into any of that epoxy stuff, but i had some friends that did, i couldn't believe how expensive that resin is, lots of "that cost you how much ?!!" moments.

That's how aircraft licensing works.
A student pilots permit does not allow for passengers except a flight test examiner. Therefore, you have to be a good aim if you want to kill anyone other than oneself and as such they give SPP's away to almost anyone 14 or older.
With a bit more training and testing you can get a recreational pilot permit allowing you to carry one victim at a time.
A bit more and a private pilot licence and you can become a modest mass murderer.
Commercial, yup more training, testing and licensing.
ATPL, now we're getting serious. Three hundred or so at a whack, double that if you can sneak up behind another big boy.
Now the whammy, instructors because they can teach a lot of these white short sleeved egotists in a career so more tests and examinations and fees, plus you have to keep doing them your whole career.
