  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

I bought one myself the other day for mounting a scope

Yes otherwise the cant is off and as you shoot at further targets the point of impact is further away making you wonder why you missed. There is a smaller level on the scope turret to sync them

Savage 110 Elite precision in 308
I'm guessing you use this for target practice?

My dad use to do that he had a double hair trigger type handgun he would practice in the basement.
At what distance would you be able to hit say a cantaloupe?
At what distance could a novice hit a cantaloupe?

I’d say something like 1000 yards the range I’m going to join goes from 100 meters up to 900 meters. How long to get decent results? I’ll soon find out lol although I can’t see shooting a cantaloupe, cabbage maybe.

Do you plan on shooting F-Class?

A gentle reminder that gun discussions are discouraged here. You guys should consider a PM.

I knew politics and religion and such were a no go but I did not realize gun talk would be taboo.

It's actually a much older policy than politics and religion. The reason for it is the same though. There are many people who are against guns and the discussion can (and has) too easily drift into emotional offensive rants. There are other forums where firearms are a primary focus. We don't want to attract the attention of radicals - pro or con.

As a strong pro person myself, (in fact the reason I got into machining in the first place), I can make the following recommendations:

Focus the discussion on the metal working and woodworking aspects or accessory without any direct reference to the platform.

I've found that it's very easy to discuss smithing as a metal or wood working activity. There are lots and lots of examples of that on the forum.

Avoid photos that are complete. Zoom in on the machining / woodworking process itself.

Direct discussions can be done in a PM by like minded individuals.

If in doubt, ask a moderator in advance.

In all my life, I've never used a scope level. Instead, I align the bottom vertical to dissect the bore from a distance.

This accomplishes two goals. First it creates a true vertical based on the bore and optical center. Second, it forces the user to align the cross-hairs horizontally prior to launching a projectile.

To be honest about it, I cannot see how a scope level is better. You need a reference to make that work and there is no reference. The best one available is the top of the bottom half of the rings or the top of a picatinny rail, but they are both gone once a scope is in place.

It isn't enough for the scope to be level if the axis of the bore and optical center are not vertical to each other.

Plus, waaaay too many users have horizontal cross-hairs with canted bore to optical centers which totally defeats the purpose.

This is how it is done on hundreds of kitchen tables just like mine :) :) .Personally I line mine up with the center of the firing pin projecting out the back end of the bolt...and Ive hit several targets at 700-1200 yrds ( back when vision was good and my heart beat wasnt visible in the scope crosshair jumping at every beat LOL).
