The only difference a certified bearing has over it's uncertified brothers is that it has been pulled off the line and tested. I got that gem from a poster who worked at Timken. When I replaced my headstock bearings ,I bought ordinary Timkens.
I have had the same discussions with two engineers at two different bearing companies. The ones they pull to grade say P4 are occasionally tossed back in the barrel because they don't meet the spec, but both said that is increasingly rare. The high price is the labour to inspect and report. Makes sense given everything is production CNC. So yeah, agree with you on that .... your P5 probably is as good as a P4 but you just can't prove it. This is SKF and NSK ..... not BS ABEC 9 skate bearings at 10 for 12 bucks lol. I agree on putting AC's in there if they're available in the same sizes (not always the case)
