About a year ago I was testing the positional accuracy of micro stepping stepper motors. For the first test I used a magnetic encoder with a magnet glued to the end of the motor shaft to measure the step position. The results weren’t great but then I wondered whether it was the stepper and/or the encoder that inaccurate. The next step was to add an optical encoder like this one

That test showed that anything beyond 4x microstepping was not improving the accuracy.

This week I had a use for the encoder and in the process of getting it working I pulled the back off.
It is NOT an optical encoder. It is a magnetic encoder. It does output a quadrature signal though.
Here is mine it looks like the one on Ali but definitely isn’t optical!
