This came up on my Facebook just now....pretty cool old school tech....if you notice both pulleys turn in the same direction, I'm thinking that's why no bevel gears

I dont know if manufacturing cost would be any lower with this method, so the only reason i can come up with is that in this arrangement both pulleys....and as a result both flat belts would be turning the same direction (as opposed to running in opposite directions with only 2 bevel gears), maybe that was a consideration with flat belt driven accessories. it could be done with bevel gears...but my thinking is you would need another set of gears to reverse the rotation of the pulleys (so that they are turning the same direction again)...thats gotta add more to the cost of manufacture....plus weight and size

but maybe it was just a novelty
