R8 Collet Block

I was running the lathe in reverse and cutting away from the chuck so disengagement was not a concern.
I was hoping for a better surface finish with the higher speed.

Supersharp HSS or maybe an sharp carbide threading insert for aluminium. But ya, sometimes there is an undeniable need for speed!
 
I make a lot of small parts and do a lot of turning very close to the chuck. I know I should just buy a collet chuck or a collet block and some collets.
I had a length of 1 3/4" rod from a hydraulic ram in my metal pile. A couple hours later I had this:

Sorry im so late to the party but are you able to unthread the retaining bolt through the spindle so you dont have to remove the block from the chuck?
 
ok thanks. Im working on a couple collet blocks now as well and am trying to sort out how I can manage with the lathe. I like this idea.
