and now, without fail hibid throws out its usual failure mid-auction.

I really dont know why I keep participating in hibid auctions given how common this error crops up

Hospitals have back up power.

I wonder what happens in an elevator when the power cuts out and it takes a few for the back up power to kick in.

I suppose the emergency brakes would trigger, they should fail to closed position
As long as there isn't that 10 or 15 second lag while the generator comes up.

Otis invented the elevator safety brake in 1852, there've been many variations and improvements since then.

Right in the middle of an auction where I need two items.

One of the lots has stuff that seldom comes up, so of course Doug Ford's inferior power grid fails. This is what happens when you fail to maintain equipment Doug
I feel your pain. We're around 50 outages for the year so far so I'm kinda used to them. On the upside they've managed to get the power back on in under 12 hours most times and haven't exceeded 2 days this year. I've learned to consider the likelihood of an outage before using the electric mag chuck on the surface grinder.

what general areas of Canada are you in? I want to be sure not to retire there.

Growing up in Winnipeg, our power was almost never off, I can recall one outage when I was about 10 YO and it was a big event for us because it never happened, power was from our perspective just always there. I recall us making a big deal that the clock on our stove stopped! The outage lasted about an hour.

Fast forward to Ottawa +50 years later, power is off about once per month sometimes twice per month, it's so bad I picked up a Honda generator. The problem here is almost entirely lack of maintenance trimming the trees growing into the overhead lines. Just walking the dog it's easy to spot branches in full contact with the primary side of the pole transformers. It's not a matter of if, just when. Whoever is in charge should have been fired a long time ago.

Built a few buildings with elevators. Several options available. All have emergency brakes. Most will drop you slowly to the next floor down. Most have emergency backup power that isn't as fast as regular power, but it will get you there.

I like the ones that only fail when you are trapped in the dark with a nympho.

Stay away from windmills too. The areas around them are about as reliable as ducks pulling a sled.

When my folks were living with us, they suggested a chair lift for the stairs. My wife simply said, don't forget the outages we get from the windmills. My dad looked at the stairs, imagined himself stuck halfway up, and asked if they could have the front room instead...... It was funny as hell.

I'm building a bungalow, or I guess the way I want it, a sprawling ranch home.

eff stairs to hell.

We actually ended up giving him our room on the main floor. My dad died there. I was glad we did that. We slept upstairs for the last 6 months he was alive. In fact, at the end I slept with him.

I'm with you. I want my room on the ground floor. But I don't mind if visitors (mostly our kids and their kids) have to climb stairs. They can always go someplace else if they don't like that. So I'm happy with a two story home as long as there is at least one bedroom on the main floor for my bride and I.

Oh damn, that sucks because I've been considering near sooke, or north saanich as possible options... guess I need to ensure back up power system
I'm East Sooke, been here 38 years, it goes in cycles, lots of outages, lots of bitching, lots of tree trimming, five to seven good years. Rinse and repeat. We're a dead end so we're always first of and last on. I don't really mind it except the frickin noise when the power goes out.
Sooke proper is good power wise but the traffic is positively horrific, something an outsider might be unaware of.
North Saanich is probably better off, fewer trees more fields.
