While there is a difference in oil quality now compared to years ago, there is still a certain amount of oil needed to accomplish needed lubricant-ion of components. All the lubing in a mixed gas two stroke come from the oil mixed into the gas, crank main bearings, rod bearings and rings. Older engines often did not have any form of roller/ needle bearings in them and needed more oil. A certain amount is needed to flush, lube and cool any bearing’s surfaces. The break in period is very important to have the needed oil, once surfaces mated/seated/ polished them selfs, oil amounts “might” be able to be reduced some.
Keep in mind that the fact any 2 stroke engine that has no separate lube system, recirculating oil and filtering it to remove metal particles and some carbon, ends up eating these products in the combustion chamber unless some how things stick in the crankcase or transfer passages. Only to loosen off sometime and cause problems.
The fact that these engines run as long and as well as they do is in many ways amazing and sometimes after a 100+ years will still run.
