I am still upset and angry ( probably should not be, but anyway... )
I was negotiating cutter grinder deal with local Ottawa guy - Larry Maulsby. I accepted posted price with no negotiations (it was very cheap TBH) and we agreed to meet at his place. While I was driving - 40 minutes before meeting he ping me and told that everything is sold/unavailable.

I understand that price was cheap, I do get it. I also understand that somebody tempted guy with higher number and he broke agreement on his end. I still do not understand how this guys looking into eyes to other people or money is universal cure.

I've had this happen more than a few times.

If someone says I'm on my way and gives you a time they plan to arrive and you say okay I'll see you then, that is an implied contract. If you sell it minutes before the guy arrives you're dishonourable.

I had been considering this guys clarkson grinding fixture but I messaged him and he rudely defended his selling practices. He is now blocked

I am not following Kijiji that much recently. Too many ads and kinda slow back and forth exchange. May be I should reconsider.
I find the vendor ratings on kijiji to be more accurate, and the sellers to be more serious and usually have better etiquette. Sadly, facebook seems to have greater selection of items for sale.

That said, I gave up facebook for the most part. I have all my alerts on kijiji and can wait longer to find what I need in most cases.

I also wont travel more than 20 minutes for an item now unless the seller will accept deposit via etransfer.

Been there, done that, didn’t get the t-shirt.

Picture a three-dimensional graph. X-axis is intelligence, from politician to Einstein. Y-axis is empathy, from politician to Jesus. X-axis is ethics, from politician to Jonas Salk. Everyone is somewhere on the graph, and where they are changes depending on who they’re dealing with, and how much money is involved.

FB has no controls over sellers, so it’s the Wild West without Wyatt Earp.

You are courageous man. Even accepting e-transfer is a dangerous today, not just sending. There are so many dirty tricks around.

O tempora, o mores!

Yes there are crooks everywhere, but I am pretty good at sussing out sellers. I almost never complete a deal without back and forth conversation and profile review. If a person does not come off as real, decent and honest I wont pull the trigger on a purchase. AI will make things much harder if not impossible in that regard

Well, I feel your frustration but I've also had more than one person say they will buy something I have advertised, say they are coming to get the item (with cash in hand) and never show up. I am part of an older generation and my word is my bond but it seems younger generations now .... not so much.

I'm with @cuslog
I cannot count the number of times I've had buyers tell me they will be here in an hour/this evening/tomorrow morning etc. only to never show. I always send numerous messages to check if they still want it. 99% never get read or bother to reply.
I had one fellow cuss me out via Messenger because I sold an item after he didn't show up at his stated time, despite me messaging twice a day for two days after the date/time he said he was coming.

Ive played that game too usually it's on stuff that I list for cheap just to get rid of fast. Usually it attracts lots of interest and get the usual "is it still available?" Miss click. but I feel like age isn't as much of a factor as I've had both young and old dick me around.

I think there is entitled people In each generation and lots of people can't fathom anything out side themselves. But I think every generation forgets that they raised the next generation and they influence some if not all of the traits that get passed on.

But yes, if you say your gonna come get atleast let me know if you change your mind or can't find a ride to come get said thing. As usually I'm flexible but to a degree.

I too have had many people no show on me, but that said, during the window they say they will arrive I don't sell items out from under them. When they don't show during the time I message saying "I can only assume that you changed your mind and no longer want the item." No item is so perishable I need to sell it immediately.

It's like driving, you will come across a thousand male fowl on the road, just because they act rudely doesn't mean you need to act similarly.

Ditto passive aggressive ads like this actual one... none of these points needs to be made, it is assumed. I wont even bother responding to such ads.
*****IF THIS AD IS STILL UP IT MEANS IT’S AVAILABLE*****

*****PLEASE DON’T ASK IF THIS IS AVAILABLE I WON’T RESPOND*****

*****SERIOUS BUYERS ONLY*****

*****PRICE IS FIRM*****

By the same token, I wont buy from Larry Maulsby whcih is the point of this thread. I did my own due diligence before coming to this conclusion.

Those give me a chuckle most of them time as there usually on stuff that over priced anyways and isn't worth trying to haggle on.

"IF THIS AD IS STILL UP IT MEANS IT’S AVAILABLE"

I don't mind seeing this one as there has been few ads I've replied to and they usually take few days to respond and say opps I sold item X amount of days ago just forgot to take down.

Another annoying thing is getting a response back weeks or in one case I think 3 months later later saying an item is still available.

The other day I messaged a fellow asking if the Huot dispenser he was selling included the drill bits inside since the ad wasn't clear. He came back and told me that it did indeed. I replied that I wanted it. Then since I couldn't get there right away I asked if he'd hold it for a couple weeks if I sent a deposit.

Only after this back and forth did the guy tell me he had someone coming 150km to pick up another item he was selling and stating that he also wanted the dispenser. If I had come right away I got the impression he was quite content to allow me to scoop this from the fellow. That's frikken annoying.

As soon as I heard he had someone else interested and coming for multiple items I said no thanks, I don't play those games, dont even message me if he changes his mind, because you'd likely let someone else scoop me while I was on my way to pick the item up

IF it were me I'd have marked my ad pending, or have stated immediately that it was pending and I'd get back to the person if the sale fell thru.

If you want me to hold it, offer to send a deposit to hold it. Even 5 bucks, so I know you're coming. Otherwise, first one with the cash gets it. Thats how I roll, buying or selling. Way too many kijidiots out there wasting peoples time.

It's very simple:
+ unless someone is on the way, it's for sale
+ when someone is "on the way", you agree to time window, if they don't show in the window +perhaps 2 hours, tough luck, it's back up for sale.
+ when I tell someone I'm on the way, I'm on the way, and they know when I will arrive.
+ I do state in my ads that if the ad is up, it's available, because 95% of the time the people asking if it's available were never serious in the first place (they didn't actually bother to read the ad)

I sold a "fast" car a while back, it was priced fairly and the ad stated test pilots and low-ballers need not apply. I had one jerk drive 5 hours with a trailer from Toronto and then offer $20k less than the asking price. I politely asked him to leave. He then told me I should compensate him for the drive by selling a very rare spare engine I had in the corner of the garage, he offered me $1k for a 10k engine. I hope he had a nice bumpy ride back with his empty trailer. Car sold for full price, no haggling, no drama a short while later.

I think this is the sign of someone who is tired of dealing with the lame and inconsiderate that just walk away from their ad and let it expire in a couple of months rather than taking it down. I actually consider that kind of seller above average.

Usually the lame ones don’t reply but I had one get all indignant after I inquired a couple of times about something he was giving away (treadmill=project fodder, lol) his position was he was doing people a favour by giving something away free so he shouldn’t have to bother following up on the ad. Wanda ya want for nothin’?……..

I’ve had some really good responses to Kijiji ads as a seller and buyer but there are some real winners out there.

D

get the usual "is it still available?"

I saw that in many messages that people are really tired frtom this annoying response, so I tend to modify it to something more personal, to show seller that I am not just clicking our of simple quriosity.

Otherwise, first one with the cash gets it.

Darren. I appreciate your stance here. I am , personally, avoiding at all cost artificially created rush - I don't like "first come first serve" messages. I firmly stated that I am coming, provided my cell, have seller cell in response, and told "see you tomorrow" . Fella responded with thumb up.
