With the chuck being almost 5 foot diameter, lathe weight of 10 tons seems very reasonable. Cutting tools would need a hoist to lift them into place. LOL.

A friend of mine used to operate an 8 foot diameter vertical lathe, weighing a LOT more. They are used for turning pulley sheaves for big mining operations, Hubs for large gravel trucks, facing turntables for earth excavators (high-hoes) - just a few things that come to mind...
