  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Newbie from Vancouver Island

Hello there from Kelowna! There's a wealth of knowledge here...And a lot of the regulars are pretty solid for helping out.

Thanks and a bit of an update.
After looking into the parts missing on my Craftsman, I found a nice Southbend 9A on mp that I bought. It’s an older, I am guessing 40-50’s lathe. It has a broken handle above the gear box but otherwise looks good and comes with lots of tooling. I will probably sell the Craftsman and try and recoup my cost.

Brought it home this afternoon and was a lot heavier than I anticipated. Now to assemble and learn how it works. Serial number indicates that it was manufactured in 1942.

Looks good! Hopefully it will be good lathe to learn on and give you many years of service. You will likely find that you end up wanting another/a different one as your needs grow. When you don't have a lathe you wonder what you would do with one. When you have a lathe you wonder how you ever got along without one.

And the milling machine... and the welder... and the metal bandsaw... and the foundry... and the sheet metal tooling...
