  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

New Idler Motor

Found a nice 5HP idler motor to make fake 3 phase power today. Not bad for $100. Guy said I could have it but I paid his asking price. Compressor seized on him but motor is smooth.

That information plate is worth the money paid for the Motor!

In the Old Century, when I was working in the Hardwood Flooring industry, I was the ONLY EMPLOYEE, "Certified" to connect our 3 phase motors: our 12 inch drum Sanders usually ran 220VAC w/a start up that would KILL the old home breakers, any with a "Slow Start" electronic configeration were fine, but we would do a floor in an old 100amp house circuit, and off I would go to the local Electric store • • • • I *could be* any where, but I was the "Electrical Worker" in the company: CAL OSHA certified!

When we did Commercial (mostly Wineries, but ONE UNIVERSITY Stage floor), we would swap out the 220's for 3phase 440's.

I worked 3phase in VietNam, (1969/70 !!!) 2969/70 (again, One of many jobs assigned to fill in my day)!!!!

5hp should start up around 3hp with light load maybe more with no load.

Me and my buddy made one to run my milling machine it's 5hp 550v pretty easy things to build basically just motor strapped too transformer. Used a 7.5hp motor and 10kva transformer and it can start the mill on lowest rpm highest load configuration.

More or less built it same way this fellow on YouTube layed out. I found his way of explaining things easy to understand so if you don't already have a plan or don't just plan on belt starting your RPC. This may come in handy for you.

Only picture I seem to have of my RPC before I built covers for the caps. I used a light switch to kick the idler on untill a proper momentary switch showed up.
