Need to get drill bits for tapping

In North America there are three system i) Metric ii) Imperial iii) USA. There can be a vast difference between American measurements and Imperial Measurements.

Well, I guess that makes some of us trilingual!

That would be cute.

When that same metric guy retired, I made him a metric clock kit as a gag gift. It was rated for clock builders 10 yrs of age or older. It had 10 decidays per day, 10 centidays per deciday, 10 millidays per centiday etc. Once assembled it actually worked.

Do you mean "American measurements" like measuring things in "football fields" or "weighs as much as 3 jumbo jets, or 347139 cheese burgers" ?
Like:
i) Imperial gallon is about 4.5 litres while the US gallon is about 3.8 litres
ii) US ton is a short ton at 2000lbs vs imperial ton at 2240lbs
iii) MacS**t's quarter pounder is roughly 3.2 ounces vs 4 ounces
Growing up the local gas station had two pumps one for the US military measured in US gallons and one for regular customers measured in Imperial gallons. But then again it wasn't uncommon to see both Left and Right handed vehicles on the same road.

I think he meant stuff like US Gallons, Quarts, Ounces, etc. Even before we had metric, we had US and Imperial MPG.

My farm sprayer has Litres, US Gals, and Imp Gals on its three volume scales...... So stupid.

I did get a set of drill bits off Temu. They arrived today and their even sharp in a decent enough metal case. On the underside of the cover the drill bits are numbered 1 to 60, on the left side they are from 1/8" to 1/2" and on the right hand side the are lettered A to Z. As they fail I will replace them with better ones.

I have a set like that too. As they break or get lost, I replace them with cheap amazon bits - not better ones. I really only keep them so I have a full sequence for emergency use. When I need a good drill, I buy a good drill. Most jobs don't need a good drill. But when they do, they really do.

Basically I am slowly growing a set of good drills but I can't afford a full set - at least not all at once. Now if I found a used good set on Kijiji or marketplace for a few hundred dollars (even with some missing) I'd be all over them. Then I would fill the set in with equally good drills.

Interesting. If you are buying the Amazon ones you may want to check the Temu site which are basically the same ones being sold on Amazon usually a lot cheaper. I wish we had a Canadian manufacturer.

I've had nothing but horrible experiences with Temu. I swore off them and will never buy from them again. NEVER!

I do buy cheap drills from Ali if I'm not in a hurry. In that case, I always get 2.

I wish we had a Canadian manufacturer too. But then again, if we did, they would cost waaaay too much.

That was my next question I’ve seen Temu adds but I haven’t heard much feedback

I do buy a fair bit of odds and ends from Temu and Aliexpress. Usually if one doesn't have it the other will but usually at about half of what Amazon wants. I have only had one problem with a Temu order and it got resolved very quickly.

When I ordered the drill bit set it was listed for about $120 on Temu but then the price dropped to about $106 and I was given a credit for the difference. If an item gets delivered later then the time they say it should arrive you get a $5 credit. Being a cheap old geezer I check everywhere I can think of. In this case a similar drill bit set though Amazon would have cost $220 plus sales tax ( about $248 ).

My usual method of checking for certain items is local first then provincial, Canada wide then Taiwan then South America typically Brazil then China. I haven't ordered much from the US in the last few years mainly due to the rate of exchange, shipping costs, brokerage and duty fees.
Just my experience

How good are they about on time delivery and are they using the $5.00 credit to bait you into buying something else thinking well I already have a 5.00 credit.

In my case, I placed three separate orders with Temu over 2 months. All 3 took forever, way beyond reasonable, and two were the wrong thing (in fact not even tools - kids mittens once!) and each time they were impossible to deal with. One order never arrived at all, but they kept insisting on a photo of something I never got! In the end, I wrote it off and swore I'd never buy anything from Temu ever again. My wife has stopped dealing with them too.

Ali hasn't been horrible. The biggest problem there is actually ordering what you want. Sooooo confusing!

They usually give a window of when it will arrive like May 25 to June 3 and a tracking number. Lately they have been sending mostly Purolator or Dragonfly. It usually takes about 10 to 12 days on most of the stuff I have ordered. This particular order was placed on May 19 and arrived by Purolator on May 30.

Probably..

Some of the adverts are I'll be nice and just say less then.

Had a good day today. Got a batch of 1/2" thick turning bits and some new old stock, never used, Canadian made drill bits from my next door neighbour for nothing. He is a retired machinist that doesn't do anything anymore related to his previous life. I did him a favour of making him a leather handle for his 1918 Gerstner model 41 machinist wooden tool box that he has restored. He got the tool box from his father inlaw, also a machinist, 30 years ago and was restoring it for his grandson but was having a problem with restoring the handle and wanted it done in leather. So I wet moulded him one in leather, dyed it, padded it and finished in a style that looked like it was made in the early 1900's. He was happy and said here I'm not ever going to use these.

Don't know how good they are, but:

Thanks for looking for me. I appreciate that very very much.

What I'm looking for is Dormer, Norseman, Drill America, or better.

The full set I have is probably equal to those you found. To be honest, they are not bad which is why I keep them. But they break or chip easily, and a few are ground off center. For most uses like drilling in wood or aluminium, they work just fine. Not so well in harder metals or for critical holes. For that, my current choice is Dormer because my local jobber carries them.
