Modern Tool Closing?

Earlier today I sent an email to Modern Tool Parts Dept looking for a part for my mill. I received a reply from Edmonton saying they had no inventory and were not taking any custom orders as they were closing. I replied asking if that meant Parts only, Calgary location or Modern Tool. The reply I got was Modern Tool! WOW! I hope I didn't understand it wrong.

I had an email exchange / price quote about a month ago. I knew they had consolidated the parts side out of Edmonton (vs Calgary) but didn't hear anything along the lines of closing. Yikes. I hope something rises from the ashes if thats the case.

FYI, Modern Tool BC (Port Coquitlam) is still open. They are not affiliated with the Alberta group so parts can be had there.
Both sold their offshore brand of machines, just different owners.

The thorny issue will be how to source parts (& service) unless someone essentially takes over operations. They have/had direct links to the networked factories & suppliers, parts match models & serial numbers etc. AFAIK the offshore suppliers don't deal with dudes off the street, they only deal through their distributors. Major blow. Hope it works out in the end.

I called Modern in Calgary this morning & confirmed the bad news. The owner(s) are retiring, company essentially shutting down. I gently inquired if there was any interested parties to take on sales / service of existing clients. The answer was no, at least not in Calgary. There was a hint that something might develop out of Edmonton under a new name (TBC). I also called Modern in BC (post #4) unaffiliated to Calgary. They seemed very accommodating to order factory parts, well specifically to my 935 mill. So there is a bit of daylight in this unfortunate turn of events.

Joiner auction is already posting Edmonton and Calgary sales dates. Don't think anybody is going to step up at this time. They still had new and used stock. One service tech in Alberta has already struck out on his own and will be continuing to support old customers, good for him as he is a smart guy and wish him well. Modern Tool BC sells the same Taiwan made Modern brand equipment (Manual,CNC) so parts can be had.

Yep. - @Susquatch I will be watching for an auction at their NToronto site.
I bought an MD45 mill/drill from them and it has been great. I ordered parts from them 6 months ago and that went well.
They will be missed if no one picks up the pieces
