Milling machine tools Ontario

That's prolly all worth a grand or more even all used. Knowing the asking price was 500, I think you did very very well IMHO!

Hard to imagine why he needed so many center drills. Have a close look - some might be radiused, and some might be different angles.

Dam that's a lot of stuff wish I was in Ontario seems like all the good machinist tool deals are there lol.

Saw a 6x18 cylinder square for sale for 250$ if it didn't cost over 300$ I would of shipped that 110# slug of iron to my house.

Also some cheap starret #98 6&8 levels I wanted but fellow doesn't seem interested in shipping them even with shipping covered :(

Seems pretty hit and miss with getting things shipped so far it's like a 3 out of 10 chance guy will say yes then 2 of the 3 leave you on read with you ask for there PO number to quote shipping.

Wow, I was sorting brass by weight and missed all this!

I have a pin block just like that. Got it with a nice set of Starrett pin punches from Brownells 40 or 50 years ago. It's definitely an essential tool for installing or removing pins from beautiful assemblies.

I didn't see the Starrett Pins. You should get pin drivers to go with it. Don't need Starrett though.

Edit - yes, they are there! In a plastic sleeve. Starrett too!
When you wrote Starrett pins I was wondering if you meant punches or some kind of pins? There was also included a second older set of rustier and more beat up Starrett punches that I didn't show. Also some small pin/punches that appear to be shop made from old broken end mills and taps.

Yup, they do. Some in every gunsmiths tool kit. Essential for fine deburring and fitting precision parts like triggers.
yes, you beat me too it essetial for re-setting positive angles to sear engagement and hammer notch's. Brownells also sells a jig for using those stones to simplify getting the angle right without having to re-assemble after every two strokes of a stone. I have an 1875 Rem on my bench right now waiting for a borrowed set-up to arrive from Calgary to do just that very job.

Nice collection of items. Best part imo are the Federal indicators, they are a high quality indicator. They don't seem to have the same cache as Mitutoyo or Starrett etc, but they might be the best outside of what the Swiss make.

Now that you mention it, I was puzzled because one of the Federal dti cases says "Swiss Made"! The way the dti fits it looks like the case was made for the dti in question and is the original box. I didn't think Federal made Swiss stuff and at first blush thought Federal was pretty mediocre. Your comment prompted me to Google search. I found that while Federal had a mixed reputation over its history the "Testmaster" dti series were Swiss made! All the ones I got are the Testmaster models!

I really struggled with going after this. I think you could part out a lot of the excess and pay for the stuff you keep.

But when I calculated shipping (best guess) I figured out I could fly round trip for almost as much. Didn't think I could cover that as well as the tools.

Enjoy! You must be feeling like a kid in a candy shop - or on a treasure hunt sorting through that stuff. Congratulations.

I'd always had the impression they very well regarded and have repaired some and was impressed with them. Solidly made, jewelled, everything fits well, no hooky parts. Long Island completely trashes them but I don't take their reviews seriously. I think there is the distinct possibility their reviews were a function of how much they liked dealing with the manufacturer and/or how big a trade discount they got on parts. I had a couple I serviced recently and was going to sell them but "took them off the market", to nice not to be in my tool box lol.

They also trash Verdict which I've found (except for the later efforts) to be quite good. Long Island seems equally negative toward the Swiss made Federals which imo is absurd. Perhaps Federal told them to pound sand over something lol? Their praise and condemnation just seems too extreme to me for there to not be more to the story.

I think its a Federal indicator in a Girrod case Girrod is the other Swiss indicator (everything else was bought by or is brand of Tesa) and are excellence quality, repaired some of them as well. imo they are comparable to Interapid. I think my view is a little biased as well from being inside a bunch of them, pretty much any quality brand can work well and last a lifetime if taken care of.

I actually struggled with going after this myself and wasn't all that quick to make the decision. From my perspective I had to drive a long distance thru some horrendous city traffic. A distance that under ideal conditions should only take a couple of hours ended up taking the better part of a day. Even worse is the fact that I'm getting old and have health conditions that make long drives unpleasant. Like poor eye sight and needing a washroom every 15 minutes.

As far as reselling stuff to cover costs, the really pricey stuff like Starrett adjustable parallels is stuff I would rather keep. I definitely don't need 5 Federal dti's but they sell on eBay for a song. I might be better off keeping them too. It was definitely a load of fun tho. I'm sure most of you have had similar experiences. It's part of what makes the hobby such a joy.

Yup. That is generally one of the first pieces of kit for gunsmiths. Of course when I started I couldn't afford one, so I made one out of teflon.

a whatsit made in Israel. Any one have any idea what this is?

an unusual cutter. I think I saw one of these in a KBC catalogue once. Any one have any idea what its used for?

Called a single flute countersink. Angle matters. 90 degree ones fit usual hardware screws. 100 Degree ones fit a lot of Aircraft Rivets.
Is the red handled tool with the V shaped cutter a sheet metal deburring tool?
Yep. Does both edges at the same time. PITA to use on complex curves and tight corners though! Shaviv makes nice tools!

Handy, if you are not fond of bleeding all over your work!

The bench Block is nice, but you can likely find a used hockey puck on your lawn that you can drill some holes in, for a lot cheaper, and that will not mar the parts!

Broken punches are ALWAYS handy! Chuck them in a drill, and make what you need, by spinning them against the grinder wheel as it runs. Center punch, prick punch, limited reach flat nose punch (really useful for punching out Cherry-Max rivets and the like!), and whatever else is needed!

You did really well and I love your attitude too. Yes, I've had a few hauls like that too. And yes, they were a joy!

Wasn't much risk in it IMHO. For me it was obvious at the start that this was worth going after. If it were a few hours closer, I'd have gone too. Did you pay asking?

Ya I paid asking. He wouldn't take anything less. I had the impression he had other buyers lined up if I balked.

Still a great deal. A good deal happens when both sides are happy. I loved that saying when I first read it posted by @Dabbler. This is a perfect example. I would have paid asking too. But I would have asked if he would take less even knowing he wouldn't - just to make him happy! LOL!

The games we play!

Yes, a great deal. I've had some that were almost embarrassing. At HSM everyone used to post their tool gloats as did I ..... until after several over the top ones I noticed some real hostility. So many gloats the big green monster appeared!

Seems like the window is mostly closed now. They are a far and few between these days. Several times a year you used to see a roller box jammed with tools for 400 - 800 bucks. Nowadays the expectation seems to be retirement from the sale of gramps tools.

That dynamic and the flood of fantastic inexpensive old iron that probably peaked 20 years ago makes me grateful for the timing, i entered and collected in maybe the greatest era there has been for home shop guys.

Dam that's a lot of stuff wish I was in Ontario seems like all the good machinist tool deals are there lol.

Small recompense for putting up with GTA traffic. If you could take Toronto back to the way it was 30 years ago (awesome!) I'd send you every gloat I'd ever had and buy all my tools full retail.
