what goes with what, once you're dead there is a 95% chance your heirs will eff this up unless you have a list,
 
I am will just be happy if someone makes cool stuff with my machines one day. Not crash them . My kids aren’t interested so it will go one day in a sale.

yeah, I know, make a video, make a list ..... but who's going spend a month of Sundays carefully and in detail going through it to the point of understanding it? I don't know of anyone you could sit through a video of everything without being bored beyond wakefulness .... let alone people with zero interest. ..... It'll be more like, lets put all the round things together.....all the green things in another corner

There was one guy who I bought an entire skid load from in Northern BC. He spent a couple of years going through his Dad's shop. Extremely meticulous, basically figuring out every bit of metal, tools, tooling, castings for engines etc. I got a great deal and he wasn't about maximizing the money. He just wanted the stuff to go as valued items to someone who wanted them, rather than trips to the junk yard. He told me it was his way of honouring his Dad - what a great son! And also one in a million.

I have memories issues. I used to have extensive libraries of magazines, books and movies and got into the habit of making inventory spreadsheets, which is why I started organizing tools the same way. The system works when my wife doesn't mess with my stuff. She can't when it is at my brothers. But the tools are not that helpful to me at my brothers...

If you think of end of life planning as a working aide for daily machining tasks while you're alive it can have huge value and take little time to implement. You also don't need to worry so much about failing memory as you age. Or where the person you share a shop with put that tool you so desperately need.

This is why I label items in storage and give them a a custom SKU that can be grasped easily. It is also why I have inventory spreadsheets in excel and use both free sku and QR code generator tools. For instance hold your phone up to this QR code and tell me what you see in the comments

I use wood boxes and stacking bins and have loads of shelving at brothers for our tools. Shelves are categorized by tool type and owner. The bin fronts and boxes get printed QR codes of what's inside.

My next goal is to move my tools back home to my shop once I get things organized and have my new storage built. I plan to have a storage rack to hold wood boxes holding chucks, spindles, TPGs, and such, plus a wide storage base cabinet under my work surface and several new tool chests built.

What's worse is when your buddy says "I'll get the door" and you reply with "thanks Carlton!" And you both remember why that made sense. :rolleyes: ......#5 was still just a rivet in his daddy's nut sack back then. :p
