Tips/Techniques Measuring tapes

Tips/Techniques
When I was working on a full blown cottage reconstruction, I was in Canadian Tire and they had a clearance on some Stanley 8m/26' tape measures at $3.99 each or some ridiculous price. I bought all they had - about 8 of them. Was still cheaper than just 1 of the bigger more expensive ones.
My brother laughed at me - he had his Milwaukee.
Well, I littered the place with tape measures and sure enough, he kept using the Stanleys as they were always at hand, where his Milwaukee was "over there somewhere" all the time.

I also trashed a few in the build process - dropped from extreme height on to ungiving rock, one bade got cut by a saw (wasn't me), and one just died of fatigue from being crimped over once and then just broke at that point. But I've still got 5 or so, 2 came home for garage and workshop, and 3 still at the cottage - shed, garage and cottage.

Also, has anybody else had a stupidly designed tape measure? My brothers Milwaukee has this rounded bottom, you can't put it down without it falling over. Belongs in the "Really?" thread. I have a Milwaukee too, but it must be a newer design as it has a flat at the bottom back edge. Seems Milwaukee has purged the internet of pictures of it too, it was that bad.

Don't have a particular brand that I'm in love w/. I have Lethbridge & Calgary Fasteners, Lufkin, Fat Max, Milwaukee & Stanley.

Like others, I have them scattered around: one in the pickup, one in the office, one beside my easy chair in front of the TV, several in the shop in strategic locations & a coupla spares in my tool box. I used to carry a small PA one in my pocket, I think it was 6' or something. Too small for my liking so stopped carrying it.

Well, at least he's staying optimistic. :p
This is just too much fun...

I use the cheapest ones i can find, i have a few PA giveaway ones scattered around the shop, and a few i bought at Peavy from the $1 bargain bin. I have take the tape from broken ones and mounted them on the front edge of the shop benches though, handy at times.

I've done that too. But the curved shape of the tape often gets in the way. You can buy flat graduated tape with adhesive backing at Lee Valley if you recently won the lottery or at Amazon if not.

I just saved about 5' from a broke cheapy to make a shaft cutting jig for golf club building. Also cut off a few 1' sections and will punch holes in them for hanging handy references in the blacksmith shed. I don't care about the #'s on them, just the graduations.
