Material hardening and grinding

So I am looking at some winter projects for slow time at work. I was thinking of a pair of 2-4-6 blocks, some 1/2" thick parallels and an assortment of small setup blocks (smaller than 123 blocks)
2 questions. I have an abundance of both 1045 and 4041. Which would be best for purpose and hardening?
Also, how much meat do you leave before hardening to allow for final grinding to size?

The 1045 would be the cheaper option if you want to save the 4140 for other more important stuff. Although they'd both work just fine and produce nearly identical results for things like you propose.

As for meat, I used to leave 0.005-0.01" per side for grinding after heat treat. More if I was doing tricky one off stuff and didn't feel like doing it twice.....

4140 is what I planned to use on my custom blocks and parallels.

I can't help much on how much to oversize parts. Heat stresses and movement vary by materials and part size
