There is a reason cows fart, they eat vegetation that ferments...the climate Barbies want to turn the entire human population into vegetarians....can you imagine the stench in the world with 8 billion vegetarian farting humans
But mine sound like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and have the scent of roses, lilacs, and a warm spring day.
 
1. We do not have a good estimate of vehicle making carbon footprint as it is difficult to get one - for example most of steel is recycled - so using raw "ore" calculation seem a bit bias. It is quite clear electrics have bigger foot print as their mass and cost are higher.
2. The actual foot print of electricity is not known - for example, coal power plant green cost + green cost of fuel over 40 year life span vs. similar costs for solar panels green cost over 20 year life span.
3. extra green costs of electric vehicles - such as new power stations, decommissioning of old ones, new power grid connections, upgrades to others etc.

Neither left nor right side of political spectrum seems interested to better model #1, #2 and #3. I strongly suspect "green energy" is simply "new oil" and has little to do with actually being "better" - even if it may be shown to be "better".

Food for thought - all fossil fuels did not capture some "artificial carbon" - they captured carbon from our planet Earth. There used to be all this carbon around - it was captured by plants and "stored". The only credit one can give to people not wanting to free this carbon is speed at which it is done.

Climate is like mountains - there is no bad climate, no bad mountains. It getting warmer or colder is not "bad" for Earth. Our planet is now much colder then it was 300m years ago - is that a good thing or a bad thing? Neither.

In most of Asia "green" is burning natural gas not wood. In Canada "green" is burning wood not natural gas.

To further add to this, when Mount St Helens erupted it released as much global warming as mankind did in 100 years at the then current level of production. There are other examples (Iceland to name another and so on).

The real question (while it may not be good news for humans) where on the pendulum of cyclic global heating/cooling are we currently coming to the end of a hot swing, maybe we don't have to worry, or near the middle and its time to worry.
 
My original posting was that image that I figured wasn't totally true. Everyone has been really good at addressing some of the issues. However we probably need to be careful that we aren't drifting into politics here or blanket statements that could be refuted.
 
All joking aside, hybrids are something that needs development to help address some of this issues along with developing better and more abundant energy sources that will support this new needs. Along with searching for other methods of reduction which unfortunately requires big business to change there approach so that the few get ultra rich.

The sad part is this a very politically charged affair as big government dollars are involved and those going after this are very politically connected to get their way.

Maybe with our non political (humorous for the mist part) posts someone that does have influence hears what are being identified as issues and takes corrective action.
 
I think that if it was as bad as they say there would be a exchange of known solutions to carbon capture between countries focusing on the greater polluters at minimal cost.
 
Another solution is Green roofs for warehouse type buildings. Currently all they act as is a giant heat sink that warms the local area and needs cooling.
 
Chatting with @jcdammeyer we both agreed that hydrogen powered vehicles make a lot of sense.
As a bonus there’s a hydrogen filling station near me.
Of course we didn't get into the details of what fuel cells cost in the terms of carbon to make. And we also didn't discuss a steam engine powered by hydrogen but I'm guessing @whydontu isn't that interested in the hydrogen/steam solution? ;)

When I was still in the paid workforce, Ballard a power was a major customer. Hydrogen fuel cells make sense and made me a lot of money. But without some heavy investment in infrastructure, it’s a non-starter.

I’m actually energy agnostic, I use whatever energy source is economically viable and readily available. I drive old i.c. cars because I don’t have $100k to buy two new plug-in hybrids. Last year I ripped out our electric water heater and
gas furnace and replaced with a heat pump, small auxiliary gas furnace, and on-demand gas water heater. No solar because I live in a multi-tenant townhouse and our roofs aren’t suitable.
