Tips/Techniques LEGAL non harming booby traps for thieves

Tips/Techniques
Oh yeah. There are no Legal booby traps that you can put out (although i have some opinions about illegal ones!)

I honestly believe that the end of Rule of Law, will result in the absolute disappearance of a large number of the so-called 'problem child's'

But around here the police won't act on it

Personally, I find the whole theft and shop lifting apathy disgusting.
It's not just theft/shoplifting - had a minivan smash into the back corner of the truck 6-7 years ago. Went to the accident reporting centre per instructions. I asked what the other driver would be charged with. Right from the horses mouth they said it was a waste of time to charge them, the courts would likely throw it out anyway. Begs the question then why bother reporting it

Had another truck driver push a car into me a couple years before that. Truck driver had a photocopy of a MB drivers license and said he was getting his real one in Montreal that week. At one point I watched an officer climb into the passenger seat, then upon exiting, full on two hand slam the door shut in I'm assuming frustration.

But again, never heard if they got charged with anything

Chicken is right, I have a locomotive horn hooked to the air system in my shop and I can guarantee you that no one is staying in that building when that thing is activated. Its been in my shop for 15 yrs or so and has never been activated by anyone but me when I test it....why is that when pretty much every neighbor I have has had a break-in but not us....I think I can answer that...anybody that drives by my place and looks in with intention of scoping out what is available is looking directly at my target bank that gets used regularly here so targets always visible. I think they see that and say "man Im not messing with that guy".

And ya the neighbors know when the cannon's go off...even the ones that live 2 miles away. And again they are parked prominently in the front yard (wife's favorite yard ornaments) so may have a bit of "deterrent" value.

A while back I saw a post about bear spray that contained UV dye for personal protection. Perhaps a simple misting setup of water with UV dye, might be a deterrent. Nobody likes unexpectedly getting sprayed with anything, and while harmless, would help identify at a later point whether they were the culprit or not.

How about disguise for the truck - have large posters adhesive on the sides that for the night say "Temu tools dealer"?
A common suggestion has been for me to buy Ryobi instead of Milwaukee

But even with what they stole I still have way too many Milwaukee tools/batteries to switch. I’m quite stuck in the system.

I did do some shopping today.

A couple weeks ago a creep walking down the lane behind my shop keyed a friends one year old Corvette. My security camera got a great video of him. A person down the lane caught him on their cell phone. My friend found this asshole wandering down a lane and while videotaping him confronted this jerk, he wasn’t phased, challenged my friend to hit him so he could press charges.
All the evidence was given to Edmonton Police, they shrugged, suggested my friend call his insurance company, his deductible is $2000 and he isn’t going to make a claim.
there are no consequences for so called ‘minor’ crimes.
No wonder people turn to illegal means of retribution.

This is the kind of thing that makes me think that knowing a guy with a baseball bat, who is willing to put it use for a couple hundred bucks, is always a good investment!

A couple years back, one of the local rats decided to steal a trailer in a small community nearby. He was, as the reports suggest, found with BOTH his gajoolies, nailed down to a stump out in a logging cut... Mosquitos had a good time.... Trailer owner was apparently an associate of the HA.
Apparently, he decided that a life of crime was not for him, and vanished.

Compressed air or C02 canister powered "bear spray" nozzles with wide angle tips mounted on all four sides with independent motion detector initiation for each side?
LOL! Knew a couple guys that wrapped bacon strips, and taped them in place, around bear spray cans to convince the bears that there were better pickings elsewhere.

They said that for the cost, it saved them a LOT of damage!

Kinda hard to feel bad about a bear sucking in a mouthful of pepper spray, when he bites the can...

Many, many years ago when I was living in an apartment above a garage in a not so great neighbourhood. My phone rang 6:30 am, the garage owner was opening up and called and said you might want to take a look at your car across the street. My car was perched on four concrete blocks, wheels no longer. So I picked up the phone and reported the theft to the police before going out to assess. The cop told me to look for any possible tools that they might have left behind so they could retrieve fingerprints.

So as I'm wandering over, the owner of the house directly in front of my car flags me down and tells me she witnessed the theft as it was happening, she called the police but they never showed up. Handed me a piece of paper with a description of the van, licence plate and description of the two guys.

I had washed my car that night and it was gleaming clean. When the guy slid under the rear of the car he placed his two grubby hands on my bumper and I could clearly see a perfect set of ten fingerprints from five feet away, could not have been more perfect.

I called back the police excited to tell tell them everything. Response, just call your insurance company. We might go to the address linked to the license plate and if they answer the door and if your wheels are laying on the floor right there we will arrest the guy, but realistically there is nothing we can do, what you have provided is just hear say.

No need to wonder why this continues.

An eye witness account is NOT hearsay.

It seems when you live in a high crime neighbourhood, the cops have bigger fish to fry. I was amazed at the apathy.
Makes you wonder - is it really a high crime neighborhood because that's where the criminals are located(crimes of convenience), or high crime because they know that neighborhood is free game (targeted by criminals) as far as the police goes - i.e. if you pay more taxes and have better political connections you get better policing?

Ya, like speeders, j-walkers, drivers not coming to a full stop at stop signs, people upset about the neighbours bbq, etc etc.... On any given day, what percent of a police department is out on speeding traps?

On any given day, what percent of a police department is out on speeding traps?
On any given day, what percent of a police department is breaking the rules of the road themselves?

Drove one of our littluns to school every day for high school. The route took me directly past the Leth City cop shop. At least every week & sometimes every couple of days one of them would pull out in front of me without stopping, lane change or turn in to the station w/o signalling, break the speed limit in front of me, etc., etc., etc.

Last week I followed one of the local town police cars right past their station. He pulled in w/o signalling.

The RCMP frequently pass me on Hiway 2 & 3 breaking the speed limit by more than 10k.

LOL, a retired cop up the road from me told me to line the top of the fence with razor blades 😛
I was on a UN Tour in Honduras, back around 1989, and the locals went pretty hard on home security. Usually broken bits of glass set in mortar on the 'visible' side of the compound's walls, they usually used a lot of razor wire on the backs and sides. We got to calling the glass, "Hondo Barb Wire". It was an interesting trip. The States had not yet been littering the area with exported Gang-Bangers, the situation in the built up areas was actually really polite and civil, with Guards on blocks of residential areas essentially signalling (usually by whistling) as they passed you along from one to the next, as you walked through the neighborhoods on your way home. Heard from guys that knew, that it was really bad there for a long while after the Yanks started exporting their problem children, back to supposed countries of origin (a lot of MS-13, and other gangs).

As a suggestion, look in to Bird Perch Deterrent Products. Pretty much the same effect, but gives you the ability to go all wide eyed and claim that this was put up to keep the pigeon crap down, not to harm some dude climbing over your fence... Just saying...

I keep looking at the trip-wire fired perimeter alarm devices out there that use a 12G shell or a blank, to warn that something walked through your perimeter trip lines. Kinda thought along the lines of burying one inside the bird house, over the door at the cabin, so that if some rat tries to bump the door, he hears a shotgun blast and the birdhouse disintegrates, and showers him with bits... A fella may need access to a digger and some road kill or Ag carcasses to top off the hole with though... Not a good day when the rat actually vapor-locks as a result of your doings...
