Lathe Vancouver area

Actually it compares to a new machine ie Grizzly similar spec but with additional tooling. The deal is the fact that it has 2.5" spindle compared to must of this class which are 1-7/16 to 1-9/16 typically.

A new King 1236 with taper is about $7500.00.

So this machine goes between between 6k and its asking is not bad. Don't forget no tax.

Which of the brand new lathes in the 12" to 14" range have that?

The Modern one C0636 does - or did. Mine has it. Precision Matthews has it as an option on PM-1440TL and the PM-1236T/1340GT and PM-1440GT lathes.

More to the point: I've had a lathe for over 40 years, and never used my taper attachment. My work didn't need it, I guess.

you are mis understanding the add, 2.5x8tpi spindle nose is not a 2.5" spindle bore, @Dabbler I'm sure could measure his, and the next time I'm over at buddy's shop I will measure the one I have access to, but I guarantee you it is no where near 2.5"

These lathes pop up quite often as they seem to have sold a lot of them back in the day, similar tooling, without a shiny paint job, 2-3k, maybe 4 to a real eager buyer

If that is the case then based on current pricing (new equivalent) 3-5k would be in the right range depending on condition.

I have had a lathe for 40 years too (albeit an old lantern style flat belt 1880s lathe for 30 of those). I've never used or needed a taper attachment either. I've always used between centers with an offset tailstock for long tapers, or my compound for short tapers.

I'm sure that many love their taper attachments. But I don't want one.

The spindle bore for any of these lathes is 1 3/8 inches. The last edition (1988) of these belt-driven lathes went to 1.5 inches, but they are not considered as good. there were problems with the main bearings- they developed slop/runout after some heavy use. My friend Ian had a 1988 version of this lathe and he got rid of it.

CORRECTIONS:

His spindle is 62 mm X 8TPI. His spindle bore is 1.5 inches. (that is what happens when you depend on memory and have 3 very different lathes)

He has rounded 62mm to the nearest imperial measurement (2.5") because he doesn't know better.

I'm not so concerned about the respray, it's clear the machine hasn't seen much use. but yeah - the price: Dream on! Despite all the extra tooling, I think a 'good deal' for that machine would still have to be south of $4k.

i'm with Dabbler on that lathe. I'm probably out of step with the rest of the world on this, but new paint = a big discount imo. One of the best indicators of how hard a life its had has been removed. When a dealer does it, might be worth avoiding
