Thanks for sharing your project . i have an L1 on my lathe and tempted to give it a try. I think I would use the shaper for the keyway.

It was a fun project. Lucky for me there was no time crunch so that helped. Just getting the machining sequence figured out and the taper cut with the threads in one setup was the tricky part.
Alot of steel to remove though. Getting it roughed down to size took a bit of time.
