  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. CA-ON Is DOM Steel Tubing That Expensive?

Hi All,

There is a reason why I am being such a "redneck" on all of this. I only did it once and I am NOT going to do anything like it again.

I once had to machine a large diameter (3-1/2" OD) relatively long (4.5" long) thin (1/16" thick) wall aluminum sleeve for a purchased right angle drive on the milling machine here as the Millrite milling machine has a 3-3/8" diameter spindle quill whereas a Bridgeport and all of the Bridgeport clones all have a 3-1/2" quill diameter.

I got this new right angle drive at a very good price but since it was for a Bridgeport or Bridgeport clone it had the 3.5" bore in the main split casting. I knew at the time of purchase that it would have to be sleeved down but I also knew this was not going to be a straightforward job as the sleeve had to be truly circular OD/ID, on size to very close limits, truly straight lengthwise and without any distortion. It sat for many years until one day I got up the courage to face the task.

I have described the procedure involved, in detail, on another USA web site www.chaski.org/homemachinist/ in the General Discussion Section under the thread "Machining Setups with Few Comments" with the same author name carrdo. Unfortunately, due to all of the spam they are receiving, one has to now register or be a member there to view the sites contents. It is free but you now have to register. I am a member there and have written about all of my locomotive construction projects over the decades until I ran across this site.

The thread also contains many of the unique and unusual machining issues and setup's I have encountered and dealt with over the decades as an amateur machinist.

Anyway, if everything else fails, I have plan B to deal with the DOM tube smokebox shell issue (and I only want to use DOM tubing). As I have often said, I will stick with the devil I know as the size is dictated by existing machined castings which are now impossible to find or replace.

stay tuned.

Re: ordering from McMaster Carr, I sent them a copy of my business registration (needed it anyway, $60 in Ontario), and they were happy to ship to any address I liked (that is, it’s not about zoning/etc. of the address).
Granted I’m in the U.S., but IIRC all I did was fill out the online form to get an account and included a business name (CACC; but to make all letters show up as caps changed to C A C C) and I was in. It may also help that my business email is charles-cacc@xxxxx.

Agreed.

I gave them my Business Number and they were happy with that.
