  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Iron Casting

Rust is likely to be a factor. I was offered a princess auto blasting cabinet a while ago but I don't have a big enough compressor to run it yet, and not sure know where I'd even put it, so I grudgingly passed on it. I did try to knock as much of the rust off as I could buy banging on the rotors to dislodge any flaky stuff wherever I could before breaking them up.

A little shrink at the base of the sprue on just one of them. Odd, since the molds were all pretty much identical.

No matter, it will be bored out there for an axle anyway.

Here's the wheel that poured short on the first melt:

There was a side frame that poured short too from the second melt. D'oh! Seen in pieces here, in the upper left and upper center.

The sprues were able to be cut partway through. Fracturing them off the rest of the way revealed nothing but solid grey iron. :)

So I have high hopes they will machine up nicely. Time will tell...
