iPhone to Android - phone recommendations?

Nothing but several generations old Samsungs here, currently Galaxy A71. But my usage is minimal. Calls, text, basic camera. Pretty much zero "social Media". Absolutely zero banking/financial stuff on my phone. Only app is Cornell Ornithology's "Merlin". Oh, and many gig's of music on a SD card to bluetooth to the car's media system on road trips.

I started out with the brick and don’t really have a preference because anything is better than that.

No worries! That tells me it's probably too new for me. ;)
LOL! Living that!

I have iPhones, and iPads, because I am surrounded by family that makes poor decisions, and I get their broken stuff!

I figure the iPad I use most of the time, was around $1500+, new. It cost me a $12 screen, bought from China, on eBay...

Currently running an iPhone 8, the first gen of the not easily rebuild-able ones. Figure to dig out the iPhone 6's and 7's that I have stored away, if this one craps the bed. I'll run those, until the system absolutely rejects them, then only grudgingly, will I 'upgrade' to whatever the bare minimum that will work, is.

I have no interest in playing with AI, after have spent 30+ years married to an Ex that thought she was smarter than me, the last bloody thing I want in my life is technology that thinks the same way!

I have a Samsung S20, doesn't help though with Sask Tel's crappy service out here in the middle of no where. I live right near a red zone according to customer service, can loose the signal walking to the barn. Oh for the good old days, my bag phone never let me down. ;)

ha aha ya i had a couple or 3 bag phones when they first came out and they were a vast improvement over the old "XJ phones" we first had for mobiles....anybody that bitches over ANY of the new breeds has never had the pleasure of trying to negotiate the frustrations of those Xj's, you had to know where your intended caller was within 10 miles so you could "request the appropriate tower" to relay the call too....frustrating as hell...but it was all we had.

Pixel 7a user here. Satisfies my modest needs.
On my list in ascending price order:
Pixel 9A
Pixel 9
Samsung S24
Samsung S25
Really couldn’t justify spending the extra beyond the 9A.

Wow the XJ reference took me way back to when I worked for AGT. Cellular 400 and 800. Good times!
I spent hours on the road listening to 1/2 the conversations we could "trap" with those old Xj's....some were very very interesting when you got a man that's been in the bush all winter at a jobsite and his wife is begging him to come home...some of those wives could use every wile and describe in perfect detail what he was going to get if he did come home!!!

Ive had the Samsung product thru several series now and am very happy with them with one exception, the "Samsung Flip". It was only a few months old when the screen went black and i sent it in for repairs, report came back "customer damage, 500 to fix"...that phone had never been dropped or miss-handled in any way, so I re-charged my old Series 7 and am still using it...that Fkip is still in the house somewhere but I dont know where.
I had a Pixel 4 that couldn't get reception in much of my metal clad shop so I switched to a Samsung because it had much better reception. After a couple of years it quit, I took it in for repairs ad was told $500 because of water damage and there was no way it was ever made wet, worst case would have been sweat from being in my pocket. I replaced it with an A52 5G that has worked flawlessly for about 7 years and my wife recently upgraded to an A54 5G, they have done everything I've asked of them.

Did the Samsung stay on the same network (both provider and tech) as the Pixel did?

I currently use the Samsung A54 5G (no longer available). We also use a Galaxy A16 (which is currently available). They both meet our needs, and are cheap, in the 200$ range.

I haven't seen a need for a 'premium' phone, both of ours are 64Gb, and work very well.

I got my phone (Google Pixel) for free (yes actually free) from Virgin mobile. Otherwise I would go for Chinese phone but FREE is a good deal. I got the same service as with Koodoo for touch less money and phone for free (over $600) on 2 year contract.

So I would go for a free phone.

I would avoid Samsung - they don't make good phones - especially battery life is CRAP. My mother is on 2nd Samsung and will not get a 3rd. Compared to Google phone and Huawei phone Samsung has like 1/3 battery life (!) My mother had economy A50 something phone and then upgraded to premium Samsung S20 something with all the bells and whistles. Big mistake.

If you have to buy the best bang for the buck is Chinese. Especially for gaming they do circles around Samsung.

But FREE sure beats anything made in China.

As someone who mistakenly got on the iphone path...I can attest to the frustrations of phones...
I gave up on Apple's stuff when I got my current 'droid...it's a Samsung S20 FE...it does what I need it to do...
When I got it, I purposely set the charge rate to 85% of maximum. I think this thing is at least 3 or 4 yrs old now...and my battery lasts longer than my wife's...we got them the same day, same model and all...she didn't bother to set that and now hers last's half as long as mine with a full 100% charge
I can't vouch for the other brands mentioned...I think they all have their quirks n issues...

Yes, it helps to keep the battery between 20 - 80 percent and keep it ideally at 50%. Even better... don't use your phone ;)

You guys do know you can exchange the battery in your phones, right? It is not super trivial but not a big deal. Usually does not pay as your 3 year old phone is not worth to keep and spend 30-40 on a new battery.

You could be nice to your wife and as a present get her a new battery!

Seems like not everyone is thrilled with their iphones.......
Interesting a few years back it seemed like the general consensus was iphone or nothing.

I'm using my daughters iphone from when she was in high school 2017/18?

The battery sucks but it generally works fairly well, way better than the Huawei that seemed to have a mind of its own and would not sit flat on a flat surface for the bulging camera.

What is that people don't like about their iphones?
