le blonde wants you to lift one of there lathes
In the hands of an expeienced rigger this method of blocking the bed is fine, but if anything shifts, you have a bent lead screw. The pro riggers from Modern Tool lift using the tool in John Conroy's photo, or use the web directly as I mentioned. It depends of the crew and the lathe itself.
When @John Conroy bought his big lathe Modern tool delivered it with a picker truck and used an interesting hook (what are these called?) to lift from the left right weight center of the lathe
That's the tool (or similar) I made to move my LeBlond lathe bed.

and done and back home.

the hardest part was trying to move the lathe on the pump truck and pallet when the tailstock end kept dragging.

Here is what I meant by a spreader bar.

Spreader connected to the hoist.
Left side slings cradled under the bed clamp I made at the shop where the lathe was. Right side slings basket cradled web on lathe bed.

The balance point was perfectly between the two sling points and the lift was spot on level.

Here is the clamp. I wanted to sling under the lower tube, but then the slings were too short to be even with the slings on the right side, so the upper tube it was. two 5/8" threaded rods can hold 900 pounds easy peasey...

Oh, first a chamois folded over 3 times, and then a piece of plywood sign board went over the bed before the steel tube to protect the ways.

Looks like my engine leveler for pulling motors.
Nicely done.

When @John Conroy bought his big lathe Modern tool delivered it with a picker truck and used an interesting hook (what are these called?) to lift from the left right weight center of the lathe and above the center of gravity. This strikes me as the best of many solutions. See this thread and pictures above the referenced post.

that's quite cool

I didn't have one on hand:p

i thought that may be what you meant by a spreader, not really a spreader, not nearly as stable, but it got the job done for ya, time to start makin some chips!
yeah not a real spreader but have used this so many times to make things easier. Certainly not a 4x4 I've seen people use

It is precisely an engine leveler

I would not have thought an engine leveler would be strong enough to lift a big lathe. But obviously it did the job!

I use one in my shop all the time. I used to use for its intended purpose. Now I use it for things like lifting and levelling small pieces of farm machinery under 1000 lbs.

No idea what they are really rated for!

ha well i was a little concerned it might be a 1.5" piece of hss, looking like a pool noodle by the time your were done :p

i have one of those levelers buried somewhere in the garage, i think ive used it once, never seems to work out quite right for pulling motors, maybe thats because i never take the hood off and dont have enough headroom....or the truck is so high i need every inch of lift i can get to clear the rad support, i think the one i have is only rated for 1500lbs

rigging stuff in the situation you have makes it act more like a single point lift instead of a 2 point, that bar allows the straps to move up and down to much, vs "proper" style of spreader would actually have 2 straps going up to the hook, doesn't matter, it worked for you, proof is in the pudding ;)

now you have to get rid of that other lathe! if i was closer i would have been all over that one

Well don't do what I do, I'm a bad example... because this is rated 1500 lbs, but easily handles 1 ton.

I could have placed all the slings on the hoist hook to be extra cautious but I've used this successfully before with similar weight. Famous last words though. I need one really rated for a ton. Or not to move another heavy machine.
