  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Calgary Area Meetup is set for Saturday July 12th at 10am. The signup thread is here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

If you could own just one special vehicle what would it look like?

My conclusion after seeing all the cool cars in this thread is that the vast majority of capable car stylists either retired or died (and they also took the music with them), around about 1970.

Were you really expecting any of us to want a modern, emissions strangled, Gen Z, tech mobile?

I do! Maclaren p1 would be my special car. Not sure I’m understanding emission strangled. My ram trx is making 702hp stock and I can assure you the emissions aspect isn’t restricting it much. 700 hp daily driver that does almost everything…

Here’s the 2 Camaro ZL1’s Ive owned. Both 6 speed stick. One stock lsa with 580hp and one LT4 with 650 hp. I’ve owned 18 camaro’s, multiple mustangs, Daytona Shelby’s, etc etc. modern stuff to me blows away old gear.

Oh, I know that! It's actually amazing that they can do that!

Strangled might not have been a great choice of words. What I was mainly focussed on is the ability to repair it and keep it running. All that emissions control stuff is complicated, finicky, difficult to maintain, and very expensive to repair compared to the old pre-emissions iron.

Luckily if you buy the right vehicle a lot of the emission problems aren’t there. Also with the right vehicle you can actually turn all nannies off fully which is a rareity these days.

I should add I’m gen X lol

Tell you what. Let's archive this note and talk again in 5-10 years.

I'm glad you like it though. I do too. I even like some of the nanny features. That heads up display on the Ram is awesome. So is the phone charger pad - to name just two really nice features. Can't complain about the power, the sound, or the comfort either.

In 5-10 years I may be thru 2-4 more vehicles lol. Ram said TRX is coming back with more power. Question is red eye or hellephant… That will dictate if I build this or upgrade.

I've always like the sleeper sedan sort of style.
As a kid I wanted a Datsun 510 BRE racing car like I had in my AFX slot car setup.

Then I had an aircooled VW phase and owned a few Dubs. '65 Ghia, 72 Super Beetle, 72 Type 2.
Always wanted something like this. Fellow down the street from me has a really nice 60's Beetle with a built 2007cc engine. I stop and look every time he drives by. Sounds amazing.

Love to have one but the prices are just insane.
If I decided to find a Datsun 510 and modify it I'd have to crack open this book. Found it when I was moving books the other day. This was the 'bible' for upgrading a 510.

I love this design for a truck, though. Small(ish) footprint, and gets a lot of work done. If I could build my own, it would have a similar core concept. I’m not trying to impress anyone with my ride (unless they have a couch that needs moving) :p

I've been trying to find the right old Toyota to build something similar. Early/mid 80's, Custom built flat bed with fold up bedsides. Eventually i'd to build a slide in welding deck, as well as a lightweight camper for it too. Most I've found are too far gone to throw anymore good money at them (and they still want $5k....), but I'd like to get going on something in the next year or two, so may have to lower my standards.... Not sure how much longer my current truck will keep ticking, and I'd rather build something cool for the next one. I wouldn't turn away a good condition old GM squarebody to build the same though. But would rather have the smaller Yota.

Something like this

If we could just get this here.....https://www.toyota.com.au/hilux/workmate

I'd build an old crew cab...
Had a '72 F250 4X4 crew cab short box, 360, 4 bbl, headers, port matched aluminum intake, 4 speed, 4.11 gears (actually, front was 4.10, rear was 4.11, she did not like being in FWD on a hard surface road), 35" Mud Terrain T/A's, had 10-1/2" of ground clearance under the pumpkins. Engine went south (started blowing steam out the exhaust, don't know if it was a head gasket or a crack somewhere), money was tight, let her go to a guy who wanted to install a diesel of some sort. Haven't seen her since.

Power steering by Armstrong (apparently it was an option on F100's & standard on F350's but not the F250's. Go figger). Got caught in a 7-11 parking lot one time, took me 15 minutes to wrangle my way out.

the track is so narrow they look like they could tip over at a moment's notice.
Years ago when we used to cruise the strip in Lethbidge there was this guy in an E-type in front of me. He made a right hand turn onto Mayor Magrath Drive from 3rd Ave, I tried to keep up. I just missed the curb on the LH side as I understeered, he went around that sucka like the Jag was on rails.

When I hitch-hiked across Canada a guy picked me up in Ontario in a Lotus Elan. We were in a town trying to follow a detour and I suddenly noticed the sign that said go right. He had just started to turn left. Next thing I knew we were headed in the correct direction. The turn was like being on a roller coaster. Once moment one direction, then next in the other.
He dropped me off and headed south to Toronto and I continued on to Ottawa.
