The Audi A3 I recently bought came with two key fobs. One worked fine but the other was missing the rubber cover that had the icons for the functions. Without the cover the fob is useless because you cannot activate the buttons
Having recently delayed my retirement by getting a new non-VW key fob for the Golf I went looking for a way to replace the rubber cover.
And the Internet did not disappoint.
$8 on Aliexpress, and two weeks later and I have two working keys.

So did you get a new working key fob that wasn't from VW? I phoned last week about getting a replacment key just to open the doors and VW told me minimum $250.
The locksmith I used provided a non-VW fob. With the programming and site visit (the car was not drivable) it was still north of $400.

There's a lot of programming involved.
1) the key has to be paired with the immobilizer and locks
2) the key then has to be paired to the ECU so that it can start the car.
3) the key also has to be cut to match the ignition
The whole process took over an hour.
