I have an old Standard Modern 11 inch series 2000

I want to sell an old Standard Modern 11 inch series 2000.
I has no chuck and no motor. It has been stored in a dry storage shed for the last 30 years.

I just joined as a new member and I have not the slightest idea what it is worth. I want to get rid of it. What would be reasonable.

Welcome to the forum. The price is going to depend on the area of the country you are in. Having a motor for it to show it running would be a big help in getting the most out of the lathe when you sell it. I assume everything moves freely?
 
Thanks for the reply. I'm in southeastern New Brunswick. Yes everything moves freely.

I'm not in a position to try to get it running. It was my father's who died recently so I am selling his things. He bought this intending to use it but it stayed as is for the last 30 years.

As it is, would this be worth $1000? less? more?
 
I will let others comment that are far more aware of pricing than I am for your area. In Saskatchewan I could see that going for a $1000 pretty easy. There is definitely some rust on it, but can't tell if its more than just surface rust.
 
I will give you an example of what a portion of the market may value your lathe at. For an example of the lower price range, $1000 would be my high end for such a lathe and given the limited information I presently have of it. With no motor, visible rust, not having been run for 30+ years, not knowing the exact reasons why it ended up in a non working condition and remained so, all are reasons for me to be cautious about what I would pay for it.

The tooling and accessories that may or may not be included with it would greatly affect the market value.
These are good old lathes and quite sought after (in my opinion) and seem to command good prices especially when in good complete shape. I think your lathe complete and in good running condition would likely bring $4000 out west here.

Others that keep closer watch on such values may have a much different opinion but I'd also keep in mind the market you're selling into (east vs west) . There are lots of hobbyists out west here that have very robust hobby budgets.
 
Looks in very rough shape. If you could put a hand on the spindle and change all speeds to see whatever any teeth are broken that would be great. Same for setting threading check if all spins.

If all spins I think a $1000 would be a good price for it. If you were to clean her up, install a motor I think out in Calgary it would go for over $2000. I believe this is 11 x 20 lathe - I also believe it is around 650 kg and similar to bigger 13 lathe.

In very good conditions these can go for around $3000 in Calgary without accessories.
 
Thanks for all the replies. Before my father bought it, it was used in a community college The reason it has no motor is that it had a 3 phase motor that would not have worked so it was removed.
 
3ph motors are not the problem they used to be. It might be a lot easier to sell if you still have the motor stashed away someplace.

I'm going to change my will to suggest that my family try to sell my machining stuff on CHMW. It's either that or give it all to @kevin.decelles who wanted me to adopt him when I first joined here. If he can move his shop from Calgary to the middle of noplace in Manitoba, surely he can move a semi load there from Ontario.

PS - don't have an orgasm just yet Kevin. I prolly have 10 years left but I have not forgotten you.....
 
In case people were wondering, this machine has found a new home where it will be caringly brought back to life and put to good use. We brought her home today and I’ll be sharing details in my active projects thread when the process starts.

I will throw this out as a reference point, a friend of mine recently purchased a SM looks the same to me. He purchased it knowing it had gearbox issues. He paid $600 for it and $600 to ship it.

Since then he replaced the motor with a large servo, bypassed the gear box requirements with an ELS and refurbished it to better than new condition. It took him 6 months. We used it a couple of days ago and in its present state it's a really really nice lathe, puts my $3500 BB to shame.

Big picture, I think the deal worked out well for both of us.

I am looking forward to getting it up and running, I hear lots of good things about Standard Moderns and I like that it was made right here at home, metric scales notwithstanding! I have some time on an older version and it seemed solid.

I’ll move the discussion over to my projects thread when I start digging in on bringing her back to life.

I have the 10 inch imperial version and it is a dream to run and love that it was manufactured in Canada a bit of Canadian history, lots of elbow grease ahead of you with that one but you won't regret the effort in the end. There are a few guys in the forum with the same lathe if you ever have any questions or need pics or dimensions. I look forward to seeing the rebuild.
