How do I remove the chuck backplate on Craftex CX708

I now have the same lathe (B2227L ).

It takes 5" chucks from China. For 6" you need a lot of work.

Chucks are cheap - I got 5" for 82 shipped to the door last week. I would not bother with 6" - just get a 5" and zero work.

I think this is my route.

Or is a 6” too big for the lathe? I have read something about the fps of the chuck spinning and the effect that has on the tooling. Should I return this one and order a 5" 4 jaw chuck?

This 6" 4 jaw chuck was the less expensive option initially, but like all things, it is more expensive and a headache now.

Maybe I'll make an adapter...

NO don't make the adapter, simply purchase a 5" four jaw chuck with the correct bolt pattern for your CX708 lathe.

You asked forum members for their input, several provided safe, sound advise so why not use same. Enough said.....!

Bah. My math didn’t math. One of the holes is off by a bit.
What’s my next step?
- weld the hole and re-drill?
- re-mark the holes in new positions and begin take 2?
- enlarge the existing hole to allow the bolt to fit?

Thoughts?

Also- this is the ‘adapter’ I had previously purchased which I had read somewhere would fit. It didn’t fit. So I am modifying it to work. That’s why there are so many holes in it.

Thoughts?

I'd clock it 45 degrees and try again.

I assume it's the piece we can't see that you are drilling and tapping.

If I understand what you are doing, it's a good excuse to buy a set of centering punches. They come in an assortment of sizes to fit various sized holes. You pick the one that fits best and whack it to mark the location. I use pop can shims to make a punch fit a hole that is too big for it.

A few more details would help you get alot more constructive feedback. I.e. I think you are talking about the outer perimeter holes that aren't quite lining up. Right? Those mount the adapter plate to the chuck? Does the chuck sit on the adapter plate on a nice tight fitting boss and does the adapter plate fit the lathe properly as well? You don't want to be relying on just 4 bolts holding things in place, the tight fitting boss takes a good amount of the load.
or in short if I understand everything else is good +1 on clock it 45° and try again.
