Every once in awhile I think about getting a cutoff saw (probably cold saw, since I’ve seen hot saws in action); then James (Clough42) will use his in a new video and shows how he places his on the floor in front of the partially open garage door so most of the chips go outside (outside of my garage is the front door to the house).

That's EXACTLY what I do. My saws are right beside the one barn door and I either open the door a bit or I cut first and then sweep it out the door. I prefer to just let the saw blow it out with the door up a foot or so.

I have toyed with the idea of a funnel type of sheet metal to collect the shrapnel from the saw dropping it into a receptacle .

Why does this work?

I would think the flux acts similar to the grinding dresser and dislodges metal fragments and exposes new disc material. As I said I've done this in a pinch. A wheel dresser is a preferred method but is not always available in the field. This will also work on a grinder disc but to a lesser degree.
