  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. Don’t be shy, sign up and come, or plan your own meetup!

Hi folks,

Glad to be here! I run a very small hobby metalworking business in Toronto. We do some blacksmithing, some welding, some plasma cutting, some bronze casting, some jewellery, and a lot of experimenting. Most of our work is inspired by ancient history. You can find us (Ogmios Forge) on YouTube, Etsy, Facebook and Instagram.

Cut to the chase: one of my main objectives at the moment, and I appear not to be alone in this regard, is finding a source for a non-industrial quantity of “organophilic clay”, Bentone 34 being the most recognizable brand/name. I don’t need 50 pounds of the stuff, much less take out a loan to pay for shipping, so any advice on a source for a few pounds of the stuff would be incredibly appreciated!

Have a great day!

Welcome! No ideas on the clay, but nice to see another local person on here. :)

I used to have a shared space over on Wallace, near Lansdowne, and lived on Perth. I’m near the bottom of the 427, now.

Great to see you here! I hold you entirely responsible for getting me hooked on casting bronze and the change in trajectory my work has taken.
Thank you, seriously.
As for the Bentone let’s talk. It’s been a while since I checked but there are a few places and it might be that a group buy might be in order now.

Responsible? Me? That doesn’t sound like me. Can you explain?

Welcome from Oakville!

Are you aware of or connected with the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA)? A buddy of mine is really into SCA and has told me about the mock battles, axe throwing competitions, chain mail armour, etc, etc. Seems to have a considerable overlap.

Craig
Aware of, but not connected with. Ancient history, Sumer, the Bronze Age, that’s my inspiration. The SCA is too modern ;)
