lots of welders to choose from. But if you want to weld the metals you spoke of... I'd suggest TIG.. as the prices of welders has gone up exponentially over the past 6 years or so.
I purchased a 3rd TIG machine for my home shop so my Miller Dynasty 350 could stay at the work shop.. and I wanted something comparable without the 20k price tag. so I opted for an Everlast 325 machine.. it has SMAW (Stick) ability, but it has High frequency (required for Aluminum TIG) and, of course, steel/stainless. It has been an excellent machine and it was 4k when I bought it.
I also have a Miller 252 MIG for steel and Aluminum, but again.. they have gone up soooooo much in price over the past years.. the spool gun alone is now as much as the welder used to be.
as others have said... dont go too cheap as you may be getting more headache than its worth. Duty cycle is what sells the machine for the most part. 20% duty cycle means 2 minutes of continuous welding in a 10 minute period at max capacity of the machine... then you can figure it from there..
