Not much to look at but it runs and was surprisingly quiet and at $50 I'll sleep well knowing I have spent way more on dumber things before.
I have a 1/4 hp motor I got for $10 at Canadian tire that's just itching to do some work so it will end up in there, a nice summer project. roller into the back yard and make some chips. Now I am on the hunt for some chisels.

Just a little update I did a mini overhaul on this and its turned out ok I put in the new motor and wired up a new switch and kept it classy with a stainless cover
I used this to soak the rusty items Rust Check Enviro Rust Wash, 1-L Canadian Tire I think it must be similar to the evapo rust that pa sells it worked well after a night of soaking.
I used a rod and a few pieces of wood to mount the motor and use gravity to keep the belt tight, it works good at the higher speeds but bounces at the lower speeds so I will be putting a chunk of ready rod in to make an adjuster for it.
I will also have to make something for loosening the banjo as that is missing but will be a good project for the metal lathe.
After all that I got to spin a chunk of firewood turns pretty good and I am happy, missed out on a nice set of green lee chisels, but I am sure the right deal will come soon.

I bought some Carbide Wood Turning inserts from AliExpress and made my own wood chisels, also selling my little Mastercraft wood lathe as a package on a local site, trying to get some funds for a 150mm 6” rotary table for my mini mill

When I first got my little Mastercraft Wood Lathe it was for pen turning, then i had a go at miniature things it’s great fun and very satisfying turning a branch from a tree off my property into something lol, But I am afraid turning HARD rusty pieces of metal just has a different effect on me that’s why i am selling my wood lathe, also i am Left handed and it’s quite difficult turning inside a bowl , tried switching hands but a bit to long in the tooth for that. Show us some of your turnings. :)

You are using that set of carving tools for woodturning? They are not really designed for such.

Woodturning tools usually have a longer shank and handle so you have good leverage. Also the shank does not narrow down ahead of the ferrule--the carving tools could bend at that spot. Less expensive woodturning tools are still made of HSS. That lets you re-sharpen them quickly on a grinder without worrying about drawing the temper out of the (carbon) steel.

Here is a set as an example (no recommendation intended):

Craig
(I have a wood lathe and have done a little turning but I'm far from an expert.)

@trlvn Craig I hummed and hawed over this for a while, and my final decision was based on seeing pictures of them being used on a wood lathe, I wanted to get something to get me started and my plan was to see how these work and for sure for roughing down squares or other roughing work and I will probably eventually buy a bigger more proper set if I feel I want to do more of it (which i think i will) and I have found that once its round they work well for doing detail. The other plus is now I can experiment with making an handle and maybe make something like George has.
