I've installed my Teflon tape on the ways of my Delta Toolmaker surface grinder and repaired the pinion shaft. This raised the gear rack so I'm shimming it. These are not the most rigid surface grinder nor is a rack and pinion the smoothest feed. Both will negatively effect the surface finish. For smooth gear engagement what would be the backlash value be.
This all started when I wanted to single point a 1/4" Whitworth thread so I needed a Whitworth tool bit. Doing that 55* by hand would be difficult but I had a Toolmaker sitting in the middle of the shed and a 2" 3-way vise. I just had to move it against a wall and level it. But I found a few problems with Skippy. The pinion shaft flopped around and it needed Teflon tape like the factory had installed. This was a project that wasn't even on the list !
