When bringing out the Christmas decorations I spotted a leftover box of CAT6 from my CCTV upgrade. It looks like about 100 feet left but I haven't measured it.

Free to a good home. First come first served. I'm in NW Calgary.

Hi Peter
I want to run CAT6 from my house to the garage so I can have wifi in there. Would that type be suitable?

John

Yes and no. It isn’t rated for outdoors if exposed. But if you use it in conduit (metal or plastic) it works great. I know some people do use it without conduit but it isn’t rated for water or UV.

I have run it underground for about 5 years in plastic conduit and it is fine. The outdoor rated stuff will cost you more than regular cable and conduit combined. If you are just stringing it I would at least put it in a vinyl sleeve (split loom) and wrap with good quality electrical tape. You should get years of use out of it before it fails. Be great for WiFi.

If you want it it’s yours.
