The marine engine stuff was injected by the rest of the group and you did mention a curiosity with a pontoon boat outboard.
The comments about honed cylinders holding more oil is fine for a chev 350, but if we are talking about a general ask about an aircraft engine (which is 1930’s technology) and I was going to fly up in the air with it at some point you inhibit the engine.
You asked and it appears you don’t like my answer so if you feel agitated by the response that was not my intent. I just strongly disagree with the “Oh it’s fine” responses.
your mistaking me for the op, you asked why, i was giving you the other side of the coin, salt water was also not in my initial thoughts, pontoon boats are normally on lakes
the aircraft engines in general aviation today are from the 40's and 50's, the small block chevy was also designed and produced in the early 50's. Every engine ICE to this day, aircraft or not, requires the cylinders to be honed, the purpose of which is to hold oil on the cylinder walls for lubrication.
The general though of aircraft pistons engines being outdated relic's of the 30's is, in my opinion, silly
