Finally upgrading to a "useable" core XY 3D printer. Maybe.

My friend may be upgrading his K1 Max printer. He says he is seriously considering upgrading his 3D printer to the new style with multiple filaments and inductive hot ends.

I thought that the K1 Max supported multiple filaments. Can he not just upgrade the K1 to both those things?

He has asked me if i want this printer.

OF course I want it. But should I accept it without saying "hey you know you can always upgrade instead?" I don't want to give him an excuse to just buy another printer when this one is not that old. I know 3D printer tech moves fast, but he is on meds that impair his impulse control.

I really want faster printing and to print technical filaments.

I have a K1 (non-max) and I'm in a similar boat to your friend, albeit more patient (and cheap).

The only printer with inductive hotends right now is the Prusa Core One INDX which starts at $2500CAD. That hotend is not available aftermarket yet. I also think it only makes sense on hotend-changing printers like the Prusa. Marginal gain otherwise.

Apparently the CFS filament system ($350) works reasonably well to upgrade Creality printers with filament changing, though still not as seamless or reliable as Bambu/Prusa. Depending on your friends slicer preference it may or may not be well supported too.

I'd recommend the CFS and no inductive hotend, but it certainly isn't equivalent to a new $2500+ printer.

I haven't been keeping an eye on 3D printers so I wouldn't covet a new one so much... but damn. Now I want one of these.



Follow up email: "With 1 AMS module. I don't see the point of the second one at this time. There are a few odds and ends that I have to get to fully trick it out the way I want it but they're on back order"

Now, my friend has been having a rough year, and I specifically haven't been asking him to print any more technical parts for me in a while. The K1 should help address that, but I'm going to be sorely tempted not top request some fancy printing requests.
