Vise? I thought it was a creative oil can holder...That's a pretty nice vice sitting on the shaper.....
Aye, I confess to my vice for vises, but this one tips and swivels, which vexes all attempts at personal rehabilitation.......Somebody has a vice for vises! I think the vise on both machines is darn near bigger than the machines!

.....If a fella had a surface grinder, a little bit of filing and lapping compound could the diy kit you have now be made to work? Maybe a thrust bearing rather than a washer added to the mix?My current bench vise is actually nice in most respects, but the swivel lock on it is pure garbage. It would also be nice if the jaws met a bit better and if the leverage on the vise rack was a bit better.
The rocks should be going dormant fairly soon, so a little more shop time should be coming your way. If you already have 42 projects, what's one more.![]()

That's what SHE said. LOLBetter use of my time to find and buy something more like I need, and sell the old beast.
I needed a new vise a couple of years ago, along came a PA flyer with a 6in swivel base that they claimed was unbreakable. Wasn't cheap, on sale it was under 175 bucks, even has pipe jaws under the main pads. It is serving me well, still like my Record i have on the other bench but the PA one is on the main work bench and i like it.I'd really like a nice big bench top vise that swivels, can handle a few whacks with a small sledge, and doesn't swivel when you don't want it to.
It is serving me well
Just a heads-up for anybody that might be interested in it, That is a light column # 25 mill drill, somewhat less rigid than a 30 but I think it is still "bargain priced.
Mil vises: I purchased mine at BB on sale and has done me well ever since, it pivots very square to the c/l and has never budged from any angle setting on me yet....but a buddy of mine, on my recommendation because of how well mine works bought the same thing a couple years later and it was a piece of junk out of the box. The swivel point was so loose & sloppy ( sounds like same thing as Susq's) that setting an angle for bed travel accuracy was an exersize in futility, however we did make it usable with a little centering, drilling bigger hole and then making a bushing that held center...they can be "fixed".
