  • Several Regions have held meetups already, but others are being planned or are evaluating the interest. The Ontario GTA West area meetup is planned for Saturday April 26th at Greasemonkeys shop in Aylmer Ontario. If you are interested and haven’t signed up yet, click here! Arbutus has also explored interest in a Fraser Valley meetup but it seems members either missed his thread or had other plans. Let him know if you are interested in a meetup later in the year by posting here! Slowpoke is trying to pull together an Ottawa area meetup later this summer. No date has been selected yet, so let him know if you are interested here! We are not aware of any other meetups being planned this year. If you are interested in doing something in your area, let everyone know and make it happen! Meetups are a great way to make new machining friends and get hands on help in your area. de-magnetize digital calipers

I printed it out and glued in some basic PA 18mm x 4mm magnets. Voila - it works. I demagnetized the below screw driver with it in an instant. The screwdriver could pick up the little 3mm ID bearing before as shown on the shaft and after demag it appeared to be completely non-magnetic.

Amazing. I've seen them discussed but didn't think they would work well. How long of spinning before it was de-magged? Now if you went with an even longer stack of magnets in the same array (a thicker hockey puck) would it increase effectiveness or work better on a magnetized object of higher mass? If you spin it by your temple, can you erase thoughts? LOL

I just spun it for a few seconds and gradually pulled it away while letting it spin. I don't think you need fancy magnets or lots of them. I should test it further. It was pretty much instantaneous just with the 4 basic magnets and very effective. I suspect for demagnetizing screw drivers and calipers it is all one would need. If you aligned all the magnets in the same pole direction would it then magnetize things rapidly?

I didn't try erasing my thoughts - but if you want a go Peter I can make you one.

I just made one last night. I think I should cross post this on the thread "tools you waited to long to get". I spent a half hour demagnetizing things in my shop and can spend another half hour again, amazing how easy it is to make and use.

I need to make one of those demagnetizers and hit everything in the shop with it. Seems everything I own is magnetized anymore it's more than annoying. Bandsaw, welding table, Mill table, calipers.....I hate magnetized tools. Thanks for posting it.
