hi all , im in the process of cleaning and fixing few thing on a recently acquired old rockwell milling. i need to replace the spindle bearings and cant find a local supplier who understand modern bearing replacement ... anyone know of a place in either quebec or maybe ontario ?
as anyone done this on the same machine ?

Welcome to the forum. Can you elaborate what "modern bearing replacement" means? There are a lots sources for bearings but I doubt you're going to get advice from them on what you should be replacing them with or how to do it.

I've replaced lots of bearings but never on that machine.... of course what and how will vary with the bearing set up. What is the arrangement on that machine? Odds are good with the collective wisdom here we can figure it out

thanks mcgyver
well , the original bearing were a pair of match MRC 108 KSF DB factory ground to Rockwell spec preload.
i could get normal deep grooves and preload them with shims but i would rather not fiddle since i dont have the preload specs
from what i read modern replacement for those would be a set Angular Contact Ball Bearing for axial load since its a milling spindle

I'd give Bearings Canada a call.

The link below suggests its just a radial ball bearing in which case a 6008 is a replacement. If its an AC, its 7008. I'd want to understand what the overall arrangement is - i.e. what's at the other end, is there a trust bearing somewhere, how are this held, i.e. locked on shaft and house or floating in the housing. Agree a spindle, especially a milliing spindle, should have a way to take thrust (both directions) although some very light machines (like a unimat) have used deep groove bearings and bellville washers to achieve a preload and take thrust.

I'd be thinking a pair of universally matched SKF 7008 2RS would be ideal. Might only come in P4, but hey its a spindle ..... imo universally match should do and is a lot less expensive than spec'ing a preload. CNC production as got these things dialed it, I don't think its a random as it used to be. (I have had engineers at two bearing mfgs tell me the high grade comes out of the same barrel that regular .... what your for is the time for someone to certify it.) No spacers ground, mount and go. That is only if it's determined there should be AC's there - depends what is on the other end and how these are held in place. One end should locked and one float for thermal expansion of the shaft.
