Calculate proper radius for scalloping with boring head

Hello team. How would you calculate/adjust radius on boring head for cleaning up this scallop (or half moon or crescend) ? I created initial rough shape with grinder, now need to make it conforming to the corresponding part. It would be welded on - so no extreme precision is needed, but still some level of accuracy is desirable.

If you have a compass you could make a template by drawing and cutting out a circle whose radius matches the radius of the part you need to match.
Then I'd copy that radius onto the stock, put it on your mill and roughly center the boring head over what would be the center of the circle. Then adjust the sweep of the boring bar until it roughly matches the radius you need.
I've been able to closely match radii this way.
 
You ask about setting the boring head so what I'd do is put a piece of stock vertically in your mill vise. Edge find one side. Mount your boring head and move the table away from zeroed edge by the desired radius and adjust the boring head to just touch off on the zeroed edge.
For a less precise , non boring head weld prep I'd just butt the crescent against the bar and run a soap stone or Sharpie around the bar. Grind off the mark, rinse and repeat as necessary.
 
is this just for practice with the boring head ? you could make a nice radius with the grinder in less time that it will take you to set up the boring head, nice enough to weld at least

Well. It is indeed practice with practical goal. I was thinking about some sort of sharp tip scribble mounted in the mill boring head (make sure it has the same outreach as cutter) , lower it to the alum plate make drag it over to make marks and adjust radius. Then change it to real cutter.
 
i cant imagine your close enough to go in with one pass anyhow, i would adjust your cutter so that it is just cutting, take your first pass, measure, then use the micrometer on the boring head to inch it out
 
You could use two 1-2-3 blocks loose in a vise. Place the boring head centred between the two blocks. Manually turn the boring head so it pushes both blocks laterally. Measure the distance between the blocks. Should get you close enough.
 
I always liked using the fixed jaw of the vise when setting (trying) to a number. Pick up the jaw with an edge finder, move over the radius, Insert the boring head and adjust until tooltip just touches jaw. You're pretty close there depending on stick and how the cutter cuts. Maybe 1-1.5" thou ish. Operator dependant.

There are other ways that are more accurate and time consuming, but the above has always served me well.
